The only problem I have is knowing I'll get to the end of the book! This was especially good - not as tense as others - and I mean that in a good way... May I have more please?

Story
Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is 77 years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa's best and only friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

I finished because it was for a Book Club
Reviewed: 02-26-25
The good thing about a book club is reading books I would never ordinarily read.
I suspect part of the issue here my be that it reads so awkwardly as a translation. While clearly not, it's almost as if the book is intended for Young Adults. The sheer wordiness irritated me no end. I sped it up to 1.7 which helped immensely. I'm not a Harry Potter fan, I could appreciate some elements of the story telling but honestly. This could have been half the length. I just wanted to shut the kid up. There were certainly elements that were interesting and heartfelt but they were completely lost by the overwhelming BS fantasy/fairytale nonsense.
I almost barfed when the SPOILER ? alert... when Halfie was named HARRY. Gosh. Like I didn't see that coming light years away.
I did learn that SPEEDING AUDIBLES up to 1.7 is a marvelous way to get through a book while still grasping it in its entirety. So yet another reason I LOVE Audibles!

I read this for a Book Club group and wasn't at all sure I was going to enjoy it. It took me awhile to get into it but I persevered and was rewarded with a really intriguing and enjoyable experience. The fact that the story has stayed with me for a few days afterward and I have continued to think about it says a lot. Yes, I am inspired by it. I do highly recommend it. The ending seemed a little abrupt but perhaps that's me and I wasn't ready for it to be over yet.

Story
Pretty, smart, and pampered, Audrey Marie Hilley grew up in a small Alabama town believing she was entitled to the best of everything. But marriage to her high school sweetheart, a cushy secretarial job, and motherhood were not enough to satisfy Marie, and she soon began to act out in troubling ways. Only when her husband, Frank, became sick with a mysterious illness, did it seem that she was ready to put someone else's needs ahead of her own. The truth was far more disturbing.

The back and forth was occasionally confusing and the repetition at times tedious but the completeness of this wildly complex woman and her story is impressive. I purposely did not look her up so as not to know the end. I’m heartsick for the family members and all those left in her wake. I can see how she would not get that far in today’s world but damned impressive character.

Story
If you don’t understand communist revolutions, you aren’t ready for what’s coming. The old rules are over. The old order is over. Accusations are evidence. Activism means bigotry and hate. Criminals are allowed to roam free. Citizens are locked up. An appetite for vengeance is unleashed—to deplatform, debank, destroy. This is the daily news, yet none of it’s new. Patterns from the past make sense of our present. They also foretell a terrifying future we might be condemned to endure.

I mostly do Audible but when a book is so critical, I order a hardback to make sure it doesn’t get “disappeared.” Get this book. Read this book and then hound your friends and loved ones. I thought I knew a lot but I did learn a great deal.
I did speed it up because I found the narrator a little slow.
