About this listen

The first in a stunning new series introducing the Marlow Murder Club!

"A hugely enjoyable murder mystery written with wonderful verve, humour and compassion. Utterly delightful." (Robert Webb)

"I love Robert Thorogood’s writing." (Peter James)

From the creator of the BBC One hit TV series Death in Paradise.

To solve an impossible murder, you need an impossible hero....

Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper.

One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.

Together, they are the Marlow Murder Club.

When another body turns up, they realize they have a real-life serial killer on their hands. And the puzzle they set out to solve has become a trap from which they might never escape....

Five star

This is an enjoyable mystery. The reader does a very good job. It is nice to have strong women, with a little bit of age under their belt, as the main characters. It is certainly a great group for further books.

Great fun, clever and engaging

I really enjoyed this one. Engaging characters and clever story! The narration was tight and very well done. I cheered them all on at the exciting conclusion.
Recommend to anyone who loves a small town mystery.

A well-woven "who dunnit" tale

I love a good cozy mystery. I love British cozy mysteries better. What's more, I love a good British cozy mystery that is on par with Agatha Christie. This story hits the trifecta. Judith is every bit as clever as Miss Marple and leads a somewhat mysterious life herself. She is well capable, and self-sufficient, and thought she had a fulfilling life until her neighbor was found dead. Being a crossword setter, Judith possesses a predilection for clues and she has a highly developed spatial reasoning ability. Thrust into a mystery and conspiracy only she can see, she knows the police will never solve what they consider to be an accident or suicide. That is until another body turns up. Now Judith knows she was right and she must investigate and catch the murderer herself. Through her investigation, she meets some ladies who become more than allies, they become friends.

In a tightly woven tale of mystery, suspense, well-developed characters, and a few misdirections, Thorogood delivers pure gold. He has written vivid and believable characters that the reader can't help but love and they serve their purpose to keep the tale moving without plot holes or wasted words. Nicolette McKenzie isn't he perfect narrator, as she possesses a refined voice with clear diction and reading tempo. I thought she voiced the characters perfectly, and between Ms McKenzie and MrThorogood, the characters came to life, This is a fast-moving novel that delivers everything one would want in a cozy British mystery, including well-timed British humor and snark. Being the first in a series, I am thrilled at more adventures to come.

Take a break and spend some time with Judith and the gang in Marlow. You just might find yourself involved in a mystery.

Not my cup of tea

A bit too silly and 1940’s-ish for my taste, or at least my expectation

I liked it

I love the older crime solving premise. I had an enjoyable time listening to this. People who are comparing it to any other book are just looking to complain, wait for the second book in that series. Do you complain about every other book in a genre being a book in that genre? They are going to be similar in some ways they are in the same genre or vein, and yes I have listened to both, stop comparing they are both enjoyable. It is a premise I like, this book was enjoyable and honestly fun to figure out who dun it. I do enjoy who dun its, and I feel like it was very well done. I'd say if you're interested in it yet it out, you can decide if you want to continue.

Twisted

Fun mystery. And I thought creative. Three women, different generations, join forces to solve crimes!

Extremely enjoyable

Narration is outstanding. Nicolette McKenzie wonderfully creates each character in keeping with their description in unique voices.

The story is very engaging from the start through the end, though aspects were predictable. The British small-town setting is cozy & inviting. I love the clever Judith Potts & her hodge-podge team. The mystery was complex enough to keep me guessing somewhat, though I had the basic outline of the Big Reveal figured out before it arrived. Highly recommend.
