Story
In this stirring audiobook, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence, when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.

Solid but not compelling
Reviewed: 02-24-23
I found this book to be informational enough but lacked energy. For an event that established our nation i thought it would be more compelling storytelling. I often like audiobooks the author narrates because they have a true pulse and authentic vibrancy to the story and narration. But I was quite bored with the narrators monotone and lack of excitement in his voice.

In Abraham Lincoln and Civil War America, historian William Gienapp provides a remarkably concise, up-to-date, and vibrant biography of the most revered figure in United States history. While the heart of the book focuses on the Civil War, Gienapp begins with a finely etched portrait of Lincoln's early life, from pioneer farm boy to politician and lawyer in Springfield, to his stunning election as 16th president of the United States. Students will see how Lincoln grew during his years in office and much more.

A good summary

This book is a good recount of Lincoln’s life. Covers major points. I recommend reading a book of the civil war before or after this book to have a full understanding of events and Lincoln.

Wonderful Story to Evoke Thought in Youths
Reviewed: 06-15-22
I wish I read this when I was younger but still very relevant for an adult. I bought a copy to give to my nephew who is in high school. Without completely attacking and falsifying christianity, it depicts and evokes a different perspective on a few monumental biblical stories and opens your mind for grow allowing you to to believe or not to believe. Planting the seed of internal growth and the idea to question widely accepted concepts that are more opinion than fact. Great for kids with overbearing christian parents.

Narcissus and Goldmund is the story of a passionate yet uneasy friendship between two men of opposite character. Narcissus, an ascetic instructor at a cloister school, has devoted himself solely to scholarly and spiritual pursuits. One of his students is the sensual, restless Goldmund, who is immediately drawn to his teacher's fierce intellect and sense of discipline.

Story
A century after it first appeared, Crime and Punishment remains one of the most gripping psychological thrillers. A poverty-stricken young man, seeing his family making sacrifices for him, is faced with an opportunity to solve his financial problems with one simple but horrifying act: the murder of a pawnbroker. She is, he feels, just a parasite on society. But does the end justify the means? Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov makes his decision and then has to live with it.
