Story
In Toxic Empathy, Allie Beth Stuckey argues that empathy has become a tool of manipulation by left-wing activists who bully people into believing that they must adopt progressive positions to be loving. She explores the five most heated issues through which toxic empathy is deployed: abortion, gender, sexuality, immigration, and social justice. Progressives use catchy mantras to present their perspective as empathetic, like “abortion is healthcare,” “love is love,” or “no human being is illegal,” but in each case, they ignore the other side of the moral equation.

Story
Upending the conventional theory that generational differences are caused by major events, Dr. Jean Twenge analyzes data on 39 million people from robust national surveys—some going back nearly a century—to show that changes in technology are the underlying driver of each generation’s unique makeup. In this revelatory work, Twenge outlines key shifts in attitudes and lifestyle choices that define each generation regarding gender, income, politics, race, sexuality, marriage, mental health, and much more.

Pretty Good

Good on the facts and stats. Iffy on the analysis… especially in light of the 2024 election. (Author couldn’t have known the outcome of the election.) Analysis obviously leans left although the majority of the book seems unbiased. Don’t think “polars” will take off.

Story
"Who am I becoming?" That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So, he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: "Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life." It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was - and continues to be - the answer he needs. Within this audiobook, you’ll find a fascinating road map to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

Important Topic, But Beware
Reviewed: 09-24-24
Everyone is tired and busy and addicted to their phones. So the appeal of a book like this is obvious. The problem is that JMC does several things to beware of:
- Insinuates ideas are being said in scripture which scripture does not say. He mostly does this in order to make bible verses fit the point he’s trying to make.
- Makes a few theologically wrong statements.
- The overall effect of his teaching on the subject is legalistic whether he intends to be that or not. He is laying some extra burdens on people that the bible doesn’t.
- Goes off on a few woke moral rants. I don’t know much about him but sounds woke based on several comments and passages.
- I would not trust this guy as a pastor or teacher.
The book itself is well written and well read. It’s enjoyable and provides lots of ideas for little things you could do in life to maybe make it less stressful. You might find some of these ideas very helpful. However, it’s mixed in with so many half-true statements that you have to be on guard the entire time you listen. I would avoid this book and read “Crazy Busy” by Kevin DeYoung instead.

Story
The Strange Death of Europe is a highly personal account of a continent and culture caught in the act of suicide. Declining birth rates, mass immigration, and cultivated self-distrust and self-hatred have come together to make Europeans unable to argue for themselves and incapable of resisting their own comprehensive alteration as a society and an eventual end.

Story
In virtually every way that can be measured, Gen Z’s mental health is worse than that of previous generations. Youth suicide rates are climbing, antidepressant prescriptions for children are common, and the proliferation of mental health diagnoses has not helped the staggering number of kids who are lonely, lost, sad and fearful of growing up. What’s gone wrong with America’s youth? In Bad Therapy, bestselling investigative journalist Abigail Shrier argues that the problem isn’t the kids—it’s the mental health experts.

Shrier brilliantly explains what is happening with the “mental health” of our kids & teens today. Sheds light on medical, social, and school interventions that are largely unnecessary and likely making things worse.

Story
If we are to believe many modern commentators, science has squeezed God into a corner, killed and then buried him with its all-embracing explanations. Atheism, we are told, is the only intellectually tenable position, and any attempt to reintroduce God is likely to impede the progress of science. In this audiobook, John Lennox invites us to consider such claims very carefully. Is it really true, he asks, that everything in science points towards atheism? Has science buried God? God's Undertaker is an invaluable contribution to the debate about science's relationship to religion.

Story
Strong men are not “toxic.” If they go away, evil men take their place, and weak men offer no resistance. The idea that masculine men—assertive, risk-taking, single-minded—are a problem to be solved threatens our whole society. The cultural elites cheering the decline of men are trying to erase God’s design for half of the human race—the half that historically provides, protects, and leads for the good of others. The disappearance of the masculine ideal is bad news for men, and it’s terrible news for women. What will happen without men of courage and conviction?
