About this listen

ECPA best seller • A compelling emotional and spiritual case against hurry and in favor of a slower, simpler way of life

"As someone all too familiar with ‘hurry sickness,’ I desperately needed this book." (Scott Harrison, New York Times best-selling author of Thirst)

"Who am I becoming?"

That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So, he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words:

"Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life."

It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was - and continues to be - the answer he needs. Too often, we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness, as a root of much evil.

Within this audiobook, you’ll find a fascinating road map to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

Critic reviews

“As someone all too familiar with ‘hurry sickness’, I desperately needed this book.” (Scott Harrison, New York Times best-selling author of Thirst)

“Necessary. Freeing.” (Annie F. Downs, best-selling author of 100 Days to Brave and Remember God)

“There are those rare books that every single waking person needs to immediately go read. This is that book. We’ve found no better conversation or a more much-needed antidote to our culture’s problem of busyness and hurry than John Mark’s words in this book. Beyond helpful and encouraging and insightful to us!” (Alyssa and Jefferson Bethke, New York Times best-selling authors of Jesus > Religion and Love That Lasts)

Authentic, simple to follow and to the point

This will be one of those read over and over again books for me. The author does not over complicate the issue at hand and always leads back to Jesus.

great message, too much jesus

it is s good message, but riddled with unnecessary religion. I almost did not listen because of the introduction (religious), but glad I did. the airgun presents good concepts, ideas and insights.

one point, at the end he says you must fight against hurry - whatever you fight against you attract, instead seek calm and peace. this might seem like a small difference, but it is actually a huge difference.

Manafesto to a Peaceful Life

This is a book that everyone needs. It is a counter-cultural manafesto for a unhurried life. Some will agree, others may disagree, but it is impossible to ignore.

Great book.

Comer’s matter-of-fact critique of the tendency of modern life to keep us depressed and stressed through hurry and worry is balanced perfectly in this book with his practical yet soulful recommendations for slowing down. Read this book when you’re tired of the hamster wheel and ready to pull back the curtain on your inner life’s impact on your outer life.

Refreshing

I needed to read this book.
I have learnt so many practical life lessons, especially about the pace in which Jesus lived from this read that I can implement into my life and it be sustainable.
I live in New Zealand and last years we had a lockdown and my book club had maybe read 2-3 chapters by that point. Lockdown really helped me reflect how full and cluttered my life had become and how much I needed to slow down and delight in God and use the wisdom of this book to help guide me in unhurrying my life.
As Comer says, we continuously forget throughout the day that we are hurrying, but it’s about re focusing ourselves, bringing it back to Jesus, and not using it as a win or lose situation. We can only do what we can do. No condemnation just freedom and grace!

This is a very practical, rubber meets the road kinda book. It is simple and easy to read. It’s not necessarily an intellectually heavy book but there is so much simple applications to ruthlessly eliminating hurry from your life.

I highly recommend reading this book!
I look forward to practicing Sabbath and slowing in my life 🙏🏽
