Story
American Alexandra Freemar isn't about to put up with any flak from the uptight - albeit gorgeous - Scotland Yard inspector who accuses her of breaking and entering. She doesn't have time. She has two months in London to write the perfect romance novel - two months to prove that she can succeed as an author. Luckily, reserved Englishmen are not her cup of tea. Yet....

Worst protagonist ever.

Neither of the main characters had much depth to them. Their whole relationship is just based on sex. The supporting characters are the saving grace of the story. The protagonist gets insufferable around chapter 12. She's just completely unreasonable. She's petulant and childish. Beyond selfish. If the author intended to make her quirky or relatable, it didn't land. I'm all for imperfect characters, but it's really hard to save a character who expects her boyfriend (a detective) to drop an assignment pursuing a pedophile to comfort her cause she's sad about her career. I mean come on. The ending tries to give her some growth and development, but it doesn't work. I kept wondering what the guy saw in her.

Story
Paul was reading a newspaper. Catherine was reading a novel. So begins Room on the Sea, André Aciman's scorching and elegiac love-story about a middle-aged man and woman who meet in the bullpen of jury selection and spend a sultry summer’s week trespassing ever further into each other's hearts. What begins as a flirtation quickly evolves into something deeper, something Paul and Catherine must carry on in secret - and with the understanding that anything more than a casual crush is out of the question.

Difficult to follow
Reviewed: 01-24-22
The story was intriguing enough. I don't love the glorification of cheating on your spouse. But my bigger issue is that half the time, I didn't know which character was saying what. I don't know if it's because of the writing or narrating. I don't know if that was intentional. But it certainly made it more difficult to follow

Engaging but not satisfying

It's an engaging story but it's not a satisfying ending. I suspect that's what the author was going for, but be warned. Lots of questions and loose ends.
