A LOVE Story For The AGES!
Reviewed: 02-13-25
This story is awesome, wonderful and beautifully written. The concept of having one character in two settings is a truly creative writing technique. I have listened to all of Gabrielle's books (the second one twice), and love all of them, but this one I especially enjoyed because it is a magnificent love story. And I like the tension and the suspense in not knowing until the very end how that love story would turn out (and it ended the way I HOPED it would!). It really reminded of a Jane Austen novel, one of the world's great authors. All of Gabrielle's books are studies in history, and I think her unique skill is putting very likable characters in historical situations that are important for us to understand in today's world. There have always been perilous times, but people who are willing to have faith in a loving Creator will have the strength it takes to persevere and love others in spite of the cost. Can't wait for the next book!

Julia White is struggling: her bartending job isn’t cutting it, and her first book has sold hardly any copies. She’s broke, barely able to make ends meet while drowning in her late mother’s medical bills and reeling after a one-night stand with her ex-boyfriend, who’s now completely ghosted her. Enter Johnathan Aster, world-renowned photographer, with a proposal: he has a never-before-seen photograph of a woman falling from a train bridge, clutching what appears to be a baby. And he wants Julia to research the story.

"This is a story of the worst of humanity."

My headline is a comment from another reviewer who also gave this book ONE Star. Sometimes there is redemptive value in painting a really dark scenario, but I didn't ever see that coming in this story. I gave up and quit about 6 hours into it. I bought this based on the glowing reviews, one even called it a "beautiful story". I don't know—I must have missed something. My word for the story is DEPRESSING.

Story
It happens more than you might think. One second someone’s life is totally typical, the next it’s terribly tragic. Everything they had, everything they planned, everything they were, all of it vanishes in a flash. Shock and sorrow leave the victim staring into tomorrow’s void, wondering: How did it happen? Who did it? And why?

Amazing! And based on a TRUE Story!

This is a book I did not want to stop listening to—even to sleep! This is a gripping story, and then I find out at the end that it is based on events that really happened to the author. I do not want to give any details for fear of creating spoilers. All I want to say is give this a listen—you will not be disappointed. Think "The Grey Man meets Jack Reacher"! I will also add that the narrator is top notch. His "voices" are very clearly distinguished, even his accents are credible. This is one I will listen to again!!

Story
When you think about Christian history, you might think of the first thousand years - the events of Jesus' life, the acts of the apostles, the establishment of the church, and the various councils that established theological doctrine. But the history of Christianity from the Reformation to the present is equally dramatic and profoundly relevant. It's a story about people as much as theology - our cultures, our politics, our relationship to the world.

Molly Worthen is WORTH the Listen!
Reviewed: 12-08-24
This is a great listen that lives up to it's name—Great Courses. Molly Worthen is so good at analyzing and summarizing a vast amount of material. And she does it such way that is engaging and highly informative. She is well balanced and fair to all sides as well. I especially liked her historical vierws of Catholicism, which as a Protestant I don't agree with all of Catholic teachings, but I have come to appreciate through this history lesson the immense contributions Catholics have made and are still making to our broken world. We need the HOPE of Christianity in ALL of it's forms in our lives and in our world. Thank you so much Molly Worthen! I also commend her on her expert performance. An easy and clear voice—and I loved listening!

OK. I have listened to all of Stagg's Nate Shepherd series and I love all seven. I truly hope there are seven more! And PLEASE keep George Newbern. He is one of the best narrators in the business. His voice has such a calming effect and his pace is perfect! He is one of the few narrators I listen to at normal speed. (And I don't want the book to end!) And because of the way he reads I get these laugh out loud moments in the stories. He can really deliver Stagg's humor--and there are many humerous moments in these stories. Wonderful characters! Wonderful stories! Wonderful mix of funny and bittersweet memories! I highly recommend ALL of these books. Now I am going to go back and listen to them all again. See ya' later!

I have to agree with some of the other reviewers, this is a great listen. The narrator is spot on and the story simply carries you along. It is pretty gruesome in the opening chapters, but it is important for the setup. Once I got through that the story itself is a masterpiece.

This storyline unfolds in surprising ways and is both disturbing and hopeful. As a believer in a real and personal God, I find in it the reminder that in our greatest tragedies are sometimes hidden the jewels of our richest blessings. Don’t want to give anything away so I will leave it at that. Bravo to Ms. Steel for this one!!
