About this listen

From the best-selling author of The Life We Bury comes a "riveting, hold-your-breath" new mystery in which a woman finds herself in a race not only for justice - but for her life (Karin Slaughter, New York Times best-selling author of The Silent Wife).

Lila Nash is on the verge of landing her dream job - working as a prosecutor under the Hennepin County Attorney - and has settled into a happy life with her boyfriend, Joe Talbert. But when a woman is pulled from the Mississippi River, barely alive, things in the office take a personal turn.

The police believe the woman’s assailant is local photographer Gavin Spenser, but the case quickly flounders as the evidence wears thin. It seems Gavin saw this investigation coming - and no one can imagine how carefully he has prepared.

The more determined Lila is to put Gavin behind bars, the more elusive justice becomes. Battling a vindictive new boss and haunted by the ghosts of her own unspeakable attack, which she’s kept a dark secret for eight long years, Lila knows the clock is ticking down. In a race against an evil mastermind, it will take everything Lila’s got to outsmart a killer - and to escape the dark hold of her own past.

“In The Stolen Hours, there’s not a moment misplaced or a second lost. With the precision of a watchmaker, Eskens assembles the fine parts of a mystery and sets them to the tempo of a thriller, leaving the reader breathless.” (Craig Johnson, author of the Walt Longmire Mysteries)

Eskens can always be counted on

I have listened to most of his books and liked them all. I like that characters recur. The main character of a book was frequently a minor characcter in a previous book. In this book we learn a lot more about Lila, the Girlfriend of a previous main chracter. The story is a mix of a legal drama and a police procedural. The reading of it takes a different approach from the norm with alternating male and female readers. It really works well to have the chapters that are from the POV of the male suspect read by a male reader and the chapters focusing on Lila and a female cop read by two female readers. My only complaint is with how he rushed the wrap up of the story. The plot slowly develops with meticulous attention to the investigation, the legal maneuvers and the suspect's schemes, but then it all ends quickly in a hoillywood style set piece that seemd out of place with the rest of the book. I was not disappointed with how the book ended, just the method used to get there.

Eskens is my favorite author

If you liked this book, then you’ll like anything else he’s written. So many of the characters overlap! His work is very relatable and vulnerable, not to mention suspenseful!

Good story

Enjoyed this. Very nice that I could just settle into it while getting housework done. Only one line near the end that seemed a bit unresolved and made me curious as to why it was repeated in the context that it was. I'd be curious if listeners past and future caught/catch it. May just be me... A good story, great narration and I highly reccomend.

Exhilarating

This is the first time that I have listened to this author, but it will not be the last. I have listened to many audiobooks and usually can figure out who’s going to do what. Allen Eskens keeps you anticipating through the whole book with surprises you’re not expecting. I look forward to reading more of his books.

Terrific story!

I loved it. I was surprised but it was excellent! This was my first time reading this author. I usually do not like different readers, but with this book and all the twists and turns… it worked! All narrators were excellent!

I didn’t see all the surprise twists coming. These characters were all so good. I hated the villain and loved the rest, just as the author intended. I will definitely purchase another by this author.

Decent

A few very slow parts and in the middle I was only pushing through to see if it got better. Unlike many, it did! Not the best out there but a fine way to pass some time while driving.
