Story
Noam Chomsky is widely regarded as the most influential thinker of our time, but never before has he devoted a major book to one topic: income inequality. Requiem for the American Dream is not an essay collection but an entire work of some 70,000 words, based on four years of interviews with Chomsky by the editors. It is a book that makes Chomsky's breadth and depth accessible and at the same time gives us his most powerful political ideas with unprecedented, breathtaking directness.

I listened first because I respect his reasoning. As his reasoning made sense of the currentconfusionn of democracy or oligarchy .....and we have an oligarchy for sure. That began with trickle down economics
. I recommend all Americans hear him out. he identifies our problems and shows how we err when we allow compromise of our democratic principles. This could be written today. Timeless reasoning that should be required reading for every Congressman, and every voter.

Story
Here is one of the most extraordinary and invaluable documents in the annals of Native American history: the authentic testament of a remarkable "war shaman" who, for several years, held off both Mexico and the United States in fierce defense of Apache lands. During 1905 and 1906, Geronimo, the legendary Apache warrior and honorary war chief, dictated his story through a native interpreter to S. M. Barrett.

I was interested in this story because my husband heard stories from an elderly neighbor of his old Army days when he guarded Geronimo during his imprisonment in Oklahoma. So I got the book for him to read. Recently I noticed it was available on Audible for free, so I chose to listen to the story dictated to the author after President Teddy Roosevelt permitted it. The interpreter for Geri imo was the son of Cochise, another famous Chieftain of the Apache nation.
While our history books tell of Manifest Destiny, seldom do they tell of the genocide perpetrated on the Native Americans who were present for centuries in the lands of the West.
If you have a chance to listen to this title, or choose instead to read it, you will know the first hand experiences of a great American, a skilled military tactician, and a committed leader of his people.
Awesome and very moving factual account with no trace of self pity.

First off, I had to stop when it got too exciting…..I felt my heart going into an afib attack. Yes indeed, first time THAT ever happened.
This is my third JT series listen, and for me the best so far. The story moved along at a steady clip, then kicked into high gear. Hard to tell WHO the enemy was, so many tracks confusing where the danger lay. Of course, the narration was superb, including for the only female character in the story. You simply cannot beat Simon Vance as a narrator. I am also hoping that I discover there is in future some kind of relationship for JT. While the hero is American, he definitely has a British accent an vocabulary.

Joshua Slocum was believed to be the first man to sail single-handed around the world. After a distinguished career, where he worked his way up from cabin boy to captain, Joshua Slocum wrecked his ship off the coast of Brazil. Turning this catastrophe to his advantage, he built a sailing canoe from the wreckage and sailed back to New York. Moreover, he wrote Voyage of the Liberdad, a chronicle of his trip, and earned some literary success.

Slocum’s book has long been a favorite of mine. His reputation as a sailor asking no quarter from the sea, has provided me with an example to follow during my career on power boats.
And now to the print version of the tale, I can add the fantastic narrated version by Alan Sklar as worthy of the tale. Fantastic and so lively, it held my interest for the two days it took to hear it all.
Totally recommend this title to your listening. An adventure described by a modest and capable sailor, brought to life by a great voice.

Finishing all five of the Thalia and Duane stories by audio and e-book format one after another reminds me of how I felt on completing Gone With The Wind.......frankly, nothing in novel form could hold my interest for the next year! Like Duane, though, my road is more behind me, not in front, and I can not afford to take a break now. To clear my palate I have Leslie Marmon Silko lines up before resuming McMurtry.......I am in no rush to end my fascination with their bookx.

Old favorite still has the power
Reviewed: 09-29-19
When CONDOMINIUM was first published, I was reading the Travis McGee mysteries by John D MacDonald, and living on a houseboat myself, just like Travis. I picked up this in paper copy. The story totally blew me away!
For someone who lives along the southern coast, it is a cautionary tale. But I won’t go into the story. JDM remains one of my favorite writers.
I listened to it again last night, in bed, headphones on, until three in the morning. Wow, it could have been written yesterday, the subject matter is so apt......my attention was focused, and I could not stop listening.
The audio recording is well done. I speeded up the playback to 1.25 speed, with no sense of rushing the narration by Richard Ferrone. His voice was deep and rich, and he gave a good timbre to the female characters, but was especially great with the male voices.
I have been a fan of John D. MacDonald for many years. He creates memorable characters. He could be likened to the Tom Clancy from an earlier time, a rather honest masculinity to his writing. He honed his craft from Saturday Evening Post short stories to mysteries to novels centered around coastal regions. He lived in Sarasota Florida.
I think I’ve read in print form all books still available. I have other Audible titles by him as well. What a storyteller!
I suggest you listen to this book..... if a tropical storm or hurricane is approaching with any option to come your way, I guarantee it will raise the hair on your head. You will find yourself checking preparedness supplies!

I feel the author has a great style writing conversation. Lends itself well to a performance.

I was introduced as a listener to this author by her other series ABATCHELOR ESTABLISHMENT first book. I liked its refreshing way of speaking and the humorous lines delivered by the characters themselves. Some authors describe scenes with humor, but this lady gives us spry dialog. In the prequel, a different series totally different from the other series, once again humor writ big. I am pleased. Looks like a new favorite on the horizon.
