Story
Dr. Peterson guides us through the ancient, foundational stories of the Western world. In riveting detail, he analyzes the Biblical accounts of rebellion, sacrifice, suffering, and triumph that stabilize, inspire, and unite us culturally and psychologically. Adam and Eve and the eternal fall of mankind; the resentful and ultimately murderous war of Cain and Abel; the cataclysmic flood of Noah; the spectacular collapse of the Tower of Babel; Abraham’s terrible adventure; and the epic of Moses and the Israelites.

A must in the modern world
Reviewed: 12-21-24
An extremely ambitious exploration of biblical narratives, focusing primarily on the Books of Genesis and Exodus. Peterson hits the nail on the head with his psychological and moral lessons from these ancient texts, linking them to contemporary issues that plague the world today and personal growth. There is no way in which you will finish this book and not be better for it.

Book 55 of 2024
From the get-go, this is a heavy read, so know that going in. The read presents a compelling argument for the existence of an intelligent designer, even with the advancements in cosmology, biology, and physics. Meyer builds his case by exploring three key scientific discoveries: the universe's beginning, the fine-tuning of the cosmos for life, and the complexity of DNA and RNA. He critiques naturalistic explanations for the origin of life, advocating instead for the "God hypothesis" as the most plausible explanation. Meyer engages both scientific evidence and philosophical reflection, making this book an intriguing read for those interested in the intersection of science, faith, and reason.

The book argues that societal norms and expectations often marginalize those who deviate from these norms, framing neurodiversity as a natural and valuable variation of human cognition rather than a disorder to be fixed. This is something I didn’t enjoy about the book, as there are “neuro norms” and the notion that it shouldn’t be sought to be fixed isn’t a good solution. You should want to fix mental disorders. Teach people to be polite, sure, but the book advocates that you should go above and beyond for those who have (X issue). Redefining normal is not the answer.

Story
The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

The Emerald Tablets talks about Thoth, the legendary Atlantean priest-king, who inscribed these tablets with these teachings that have transcended time (from the 8th century but said to be 36,000 years old). The text gets into cosmic order, spiritual evolution, and the nature of reality itself. The tablets' Whether viewed as historical artifacts or allegorical treasures, the tablets remain a cornerstone in the exploration of mystical philosophy and the human quest for enlightenment.

In virtually every way that can be measured, Gen Z’s mental health is worse than that of previous generations. Youth suicide rates are climbing, antidepressant prescriptions for children are common, and the proliferation of mental health diagnoses has not helped the staggering number of kids who are lonely, lost, sad and fearful of growing up. What’s gone wrong with America’s youth? In Bad Therapy, bestselling investigative journalist Abigail Shrier argues that the problem isn’t the kids—it’s the mental health experts.

This is a great read, to ruin the buildup. From the beginning she is showing the troubled trends of postmodern / contemporary therapy that kids are flooded with today. She (deservingly) criticizes therapists who prioritize the modern ideological baby-like pandering over actual patient care, and often, pushing the political agendas they come with as a priority over treatment. The book continues with diving into a multitude of instances showing as much. These actions undermine the trust and effectiveness of therapy, turning it into more of a tool for societal change rather than a means of personal betterment. In the end, flowers don’t grow in powdered sugar, they grow in dirt (to steal one of her quotes). The participation trophy generation and those that followed are ruining children by wanting to be their friends before parents, and we can see the downfall of western culture as the result.

Or been told that being obese is healthy, that there is no such thing as biological sex, or that only White people can be racist? Are you confused by these ideas, and do you wonder how they have managed to challenge the logic of Western society? In this probing volume, Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay document the evolution of the dogma that informs these ideas, from its coarse origins in French postmodernism to its refinement within activist academic fields.

The research that went into this book was wonderfully done. It talks about how the postmodern theorists and their driving ideologies are destroying this country, and ironically, pushing Newton's cradle further and further to the point where the swing back will be a far-right authoritarian. Pluckrose and Lindsay point out that all who push these (Gender studies, critical race theory, etc) may be doing it for a noble intent, despite being ignorant to what will come of it. They skillfully dissect these theories and make the case for those pushing these destruction theories to reevaluate these ideologies in both academia and broader society. "Cynical Theories" is an overall home run, covering many of the problems in society today.

Murray Rothbard was known as the state's greatest living enemy, and this audiobook is his most powerful statement on the topic. He explains what a state is and what it is not. He shows how it is an institution that violates all that we hold as honest and moral, and how it operates under a false cover.

A great work that exposes the true nature of government power. Rothbard dissects the state, revealing it not as a benevolent protector of society as it sells itself to be, but as an institution inherently driven by coercion and exploitation. He continues by covering how the state operates to maintain and expand its authority at the expense of individual liberty and voluntary cooperation. These insights are as ever so more relevant today as to when the book was first published, as we see what the snowball has become.
