Publisher's summary

Murray Rothbard was known as the state's greatest living enemy, and this audiobook is his most powerful statement on the topic. He explains what a state is and what it is not. He shows how it is an institution that violates all that we hold as honest and moral, and how it operates under a false cover. He shows how the state wrecks freedom, destroys civilization, and threatens all lives and property and social well-being, all under the veneer of "good intentions".

It's Rothbard

Clipped audio at chapter ends but tolerable for the quality content. A quick listen for your commute

Great book, alright narrator.

Murray Rothbard’s most famous book does a wonderful job explaining what the state is, and what it isn’t. It’s a must for anyone who is interested in anarchism.

However, I am not a huge fan of the narrator and the editing can be abrupt between chapters.

Worth it for the short time.

Well voiced and a wonderful piece by the author. Even though short, I find it well worth it for the contents.

A must read for all Americans

professor Murray Rothbard breaks down the fundamentals of state power versus individual liberty. No work better exemplifies the world we live in today. The oligopolistic Power of state and corporations are destroying United States year over year. This 75 page book simplifies The world we live in

terrible editing

The book is great, but every chapter is cut short by a word or sometimes a paragraph. The editing ruins what should be five stars. It is only 7 chapaters...

Great Book

Great material, but seemed to cut out the last word or two of a section.

Excellent book, but…

The audio of each chapter cuts off the last sentence. It is distracting and unfortunate, as the book is amazing. The book can be found, legally, for free online as well.

A large piece of the foundation of applicable knowledge.

For a curious mind. If you are searching for a deeper understanding to bring context to the chaos that pervades our culture and society you will find pieces to the puzzle that have eluded you here. Insight to the structure of underlying hidden mechanisms that form the world around us are elucidated in such plain terms it’s appalling that isn’t common knowledge. John Taylor Gatto’s I would also highly recommend.

Government is slavery!

I have long stopped studying the details of the overarching deception because it's just a distraction. All forms of govt are unethical, immoral, inhumane, and non-consensual; and, therefore, criminal. Government cannot exist without taxation. Taxation is non consensual. There is essentially no difference between it and a "protection" racket/extortion racket of a mafia. All govt employees (regardless of race, creed, age, gender, or sexual orientation) are paid with taxes; thereby making ANY & ALL actions they take as govt employees (but quite frankly their personal life as well) immoral; no matter how "good" or "necessary" that action is deemed by the observer. Very much the same way any and all the actions taken by a mafia henchman in their role as a goon, even if they are passing out turkeys on Thanksgiving to the poor. Those turkeys were purchased with extorted, protection racket 💵💰, if not just directly stolen from the producer. So whichever "benefit" one would claim; whether it be roads, schools, assistance/welfare, all of it is paid with extorted 💵. All licenses, fines, fees, drug laws, traffic infractions; and every single 🔫 law is a violation of human rights. Govt is the ultimate manifestation of man's inhumanity to man. If you vote, whether it be Republican, Democrat, Independent, Green, or Libertarian® Party, not only are you voting for this extortion but also the fraud, assault and battery, kidnapping, rape, and murder that, by definition, are essential aspects of people organizing into govts. This means you are a #Statist. And if you are religious and think yourself a good, righteous practitioner, you are not. You are not a good Christian, Jew, or Muslim or whatever other religion that recognizes all forms of theft as sin. You are not going to Heaven, Jannah, or Shamayim if you vote for govt because you are voting for sin. Thou shalt not steal (or vote for ppl to steal). Thou shalt not murder. Taxation is theft. Government is slavery. #Voluntaryism #taxationistheft #consent #logic

Brilliant, Insightful

A revelation of issues and insights that most modern people have forgotten, to the extent they were ever considered.

Am skeptical about the civility of earlier wars, and would look into that further.
