Story
Winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel, Red Mars is the first book in Kim Stanley Robinson's best-selling trilogy. Red Mars is praised by scientists for its detailed visions of future technology. It is also hailed by authors and critics for its vivid characters and dramatic conflicts.
For centuries, the red planet has enticed the people of Earth. Now an international group of scientists has colonized Mars. Leaving Earth forever, these 100 people have traveled nine months to reach their new home. This is the remarkable story of the world they create - and the hidden power struggles of those who want to control it.

A thought experiment of Martian colonization.
Reviewed: 11-30-24
There were several interesting and disparate sciences brought together in this moderately entertaining and idealized thought-experiment of Martian colonization. Unfortunately, some of these sciences seem poorly understood or significantly idealized by the author who seemed (at times) to be straining to explain them to himself through a character's inner dialogue. The story itself was a bit rushed while simultaneously being overly verbose. Too, the underlying meritocratic, communal utopia to which the author frequently alluded seems a greater and less believable fiction than the tech and imagined planetology. Admittedly, this could be a double-entendre with the title but it felt unreal and too Roddenberry-esque. I know this book is a hallowed sci-fi classic but the story itself feels stilted, cold and distant. I am happy that I read it, but wont be seeking out the others. If you don't expect an epic, character-driven story, but instead a chin-rubbing, what-if story, you will likely enjoy this. It was a bit like the surface of Mars for me... dry with occasional geographical relief, and veiled with a thin atmosphere.

Story
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

I have never cried over history book before.
Reviewed: 12-19-22
The satin prose of Mr Chernow rivals Foote's behemoth work. So illustrative was the history of this man, I found myself wanting a third term for him after his passing just to prolong the story. USG was naively trusting, brutishly calculated, human, and honorable above all. Every aspect of this man seemed to be covered. I am a better American for having listened to this book. Chernow's fluidity combined with Bramhall's performance left me wanting more. I will seek them out again. This is required reading for a troubled time in our nation. It gives me hope of a better UNITED States of America.

It was the first time i had studied the Bronze Age and my knowledge was limited to war games and video games prior. If unfamiliar, I would recommend reading it rather than listening. Also Cline's cadence is a bit ponderous so listening at 1.2x speed was better. I learned a lot.

Story
The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world's greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire.

This book, although dense, was very enjoyable. The far reaching aspects and global impacts of the era are highlighted much more so than other books concentrating mainly on troop movements and military history alone. This book details struggles in the Americas, South Asia and the Middle East in addition to the famous campaigns and battles. I would like a print version for reference.

This was my first Rushdie book. I thought the performance was great. Rushdie's style was surprising as i had only heard of his more controversial book TSV. It was a little hard to follow and was kind of tpugh to get thru but i think all magical realism is challenging. i recommend it if you like authors like GGMarquez and JLBorges. I may try another of his books.
