A dance club full of bodies. Cause of death - a mystery. The lone survivor - a man, raving like a lunatic, wearing only a deerstalker hat. Now, the man who calls himself Sherman Holmes is being studied like a lab rat by a top-secret government agency. How is it he can be barely clinging to reality one minute - yet be a seeming genius the next? Within his brain might just be the greatest scientific breakthrough of the millennium, if anyone can figure out how to access it. Enter the agent code named Watson.

So funny
Reviewed: 02-27-24
There have been so many Holmes pastiches, I almost skipped this. But Drew Hayes lives up to his history for clever humor here.
The narrator combines good pacing with a “just the facts” approach that makes the story even more enjoyable.

Short stories always vary in quality, but these range from pretty good to excellent. It’s frustrating not to know where the stories start, though. Would it kill them to include a table of contents?

Story
In the days of yore, he flew the skies and scorched angry mobs - now he hides from swamp tour boats and rises only with the greatest reluctance from his La-Z-Boy recliner. Laying low in the bayou, this once-magnificent fire breather has been reduced to lighting Marlboros with nose sparks, swilling Absolut in a Flashdance T-shirt, and binging Netflix in a fishing shack. For centuries, he struck fear in hearts far and wide as Wyvern, Lord Highfire of the Highfire Eyrie - now he goes by Vern.

Story
The brilliantly unorthodox Kylara Vatta - black-sheep scion of Vatta Transport Ltd., one of the galaxy's wealthiest merchant houses - is a heroine like no other, blessed with a killer instinct both for business and for battle. Now, in the aftermath of cold-blooded assassinations that have left her parents dead and the Vatta shipping empire shattered, Kylara faces her greatest challenge yet. There is a time for grief and a time for revenge. This is decidedly the latter.

Good story, but not for the car
Reviewed: 07-21-15
I love the original Dorothy Sayers books. Jill Paton Walsh does as excellent job of continuing the series in most respects. The main difference is that Lord and Lady Peter no longer toss quotations back and forth as freely, which is a relatively minor thing.
Others have commented adversely on the sound quality of this recording. When I first tried to listen to it while driving, it was unintelligible. When I gave it one last try, NOT in the car, it was totally clear. Maybe the speakers, maybe a cleaner download, whatever the cause, no longer a problem.

There's no "again." I skimmed it the first time, and don't intend to go back for the parts I skipped. That said, I do still like the series, and intend to continue with future books.

Kitty Norville is everybody's favorite werewolf DJ and out-of-the-closet supernatural creature. Over the course of eight books, she's fought evil vampires, were-creatures, and some serious black magic. She's done it all with a sharp wit and the help of a memorable cast of werewolf hunters, psychics, and if-not-good-then-neutral vampires by her side. Kitty's Greatest Hits not only gives listeners some of Kitty's further adventures, it offers longtime fans a window into the origins of some of their favorite characters.

While the stories are good, many have appeared elsewhere in theme anthologies. If you like Carrie's work, and don't normally buy short story collections, this is a good value. I just think there should be better disclosure.

This book had some very good sections.
I almost never skip ahead in an audiobook, but I did on this one, just to get it over and done.
Not all books make the transition from paper to audio well, and I suspect this is one of the others.
