Expected cliche but it's nothing like that...
Reviewed: 03-20-24
I was not so much interested in the plot and really thought it would be a cliche damsel in distress story. I was happily, completely, wrong. I should have known better considering the authors previous books I've listened to.
It was like a less Hollywood D&D and in a good way because it was unique, charming, witty and the hen was honestly just a topper on the cake because, I have hens and I'm pretty sure they're possessed.
I found myself in each character in one way or another and kept guessing at the direction the entire story would go! I love that no part of the story is long, boring and drawn out beyond attention span.
I have happily recommended this book to people before I even had it finished and will certainly continue to do so as well as read other words from this pleasantly unique author!

Another knock out of this world!

I began by listening to The Twisted Ones, and fell in love with the writing, character development that was both something I could relate to as well as it didn't get stale and cliche. This book as well, did the same. The sarcasm and the thoughts to the main characters internal monologue are fantastic and reel you in so well! The ability of the author both in imagination and the bore of life blend so well and I truly don't ever know what's going to happen next. This book touched some personal feels as well for me and I appreciate that because the author definitely did their research or, probably was in that situation. My hats off to you as you quickly become my favorite author after years of having a pretty solid list of tops.

Possibly this book would be better for someone else but it was very dry and slow for me. The mystery part was boring as well. The writing was extremely descriptive and it just knocked out my ability to listen

College professor Stephen Barlow needs cash. Badly. He puts his skepticism aside and signs on to a paranormal research organization in the hopes of scoring a fat bonus. Enter Chaythe Asylum: a long-shuttered and controversial institution where patients were allegedly subjected to unethical experiments. Stephen deems the old building, closed in 1989 after a series of grisly murders, as good a place as any to explore the possibility of the supernatural, and arranges to take a tour with his students. But it turns out that the asylum is not as abandoned as it seems. There is something sinister in the building.

Will definitely continue series

The only reason I had any issues with this book is the beginning. The dwelling on the kids death got old very quickly and seemed to not have much to do with the plot line at all. Unless it plays into the series later, it felt totally useless and like a space filler.
The rest of the book was great, the ups and downs of the drama were well balanced and there was enough mystery left the entire way through to maintain interest. The character development was to my personal liking, enough to be relevant to the story but not overdone. I also felt throwing the boyfriend character in was needed as a balance and the author used that well.
Can't wait to go to the next in the series! Definitely recommend this and the authors writing style.

I couldn't finish after chapter 6
Reviewed: 05-19-22
At first I loved the plot line but then it started to drag. The author put so much detail into every little thing, that I started skipping forward 30 seconds again and again to finish the repetitive cycle. I couldn't finish it after chapter 6 because I was bored to be blatantly honest.

Story
The members of the Polaris Project knew what they were giving up when they volunteered to fly to the star named Angel-21, but the allure of being the first explorers to leave the Solar System far outweighed the risks. As it turned out, the most dangerous thing they faced wasn't the mission, it was the homecoming. Eight hundred years have passed, and Earth is nothing like they thought it would be.

* SPOILERS WARNING*
I really was engaged in this story from the beginning it happens at a quick enough pace that you don't struggle. There really was not a point through the book that I lost interested and thought it was drudging on.
I only removed one star because I felt the ending didn't line up with the plot question from the beginning. In the beginning they question the Mars society as having some strange anterior motive or at least they allude to it and keep alluding to it right to the end. In the end when the alien is seeking to help Mark and the other survivor go back to Earth and help the remaining humans become more advanced again, I really thought it would cue up the reason the aliens seemed off the whole time. It ended in a rather, I suppose, realistic way where the higher ups don't care about the mission or Mark and his crew and Mark is left wondering if they should have remained on Earth. Maybe the author was leaving it open for another book and if so I hope it answers why they alluded to Mars having anterior motives, why the history of the Earth was that important to them, how they don't know much about Earth for being so advanced and what happens to the human who helped Mark escape.

I have been left with few words other than praise for this book, writer and narrator!
I loved how the story came along in a slow progression but not boring like so often. There's enough of the story and mystery that you stay entertained from beginning to end. I was totally blank right until near the end at what the heck was happening but in a very engaging way. I figured it out, well some of it nearly the end but still was blown away at the entire wrap up of the rather large mystery.
This was about a lot more than one missing girl and it shows the caution in believing things without care. The author also came close to the 4th wall in his writing but skirted that line in a glorious way that reminds you to think rationally. I will absolutely be listening to and reading more of his work.

I usually can get myself through any book but this one I quit about an hour and a half in. It's not a story as much as jumping between characters minds and it's just boring jargon of thoughts. It isn't interesting and I just quit due to this.
