About this listen

A young woman discovers a strange portal in her uncle's house, leading to madness and terror in this gripping new novel from the author of the "innovative, unexpected, and absolutely chilling" (Mira Grant, Nebula Award-winning author) The Twisted Ones.

Pray they are hungry.

Kara finds these words in the mysterious bunker that she’s discovered behind a hole in the wall of her uncle's house. Freshly divorced and living back at home, Kara now becomes obsessed with these cryptic words and starts exploring the peculiar bunker - only to discover that it holds portals to countless alternate realities. But these places are haunted by creatures that seem to hear thoughts...and the more you fear them, the stronger they become.

With her distinctive "delightfully fresh and subversive" (SF Bluestocking) prose and the strange, sinister wonder found in Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, The Hollow Places is another compelling and white-knuckled horror novel that you won't be able to pause.

Story kept me listening, wish it had a different narrator
Odd sense of inflection, can hear the edit breaks,
Has trouble keeping the male voices straight if one has a line right after another, tend to bleed into each other

Great story w/ a subpar reader

This starts laugh-out-loud funny, moves into the eerie strange, then tosses in moments of body horror.

There’s no romance. There ARE friendships, wit, and characters I enjoyed getting to know.

All of that, and it’s an homage to one of my favourite stories. If you’ve read that one, you’ll see it.

The narration was really good.

I recommend this one, as well as The Twisted Ones by the same author and narrator.

LOVED IT!!!

Certainly hope Ms. Kingfisher decides to write a sequel to this wonderful book. It is fun to listen to, engaging, and compelling. Please write the sequel. Tell us what happens to uncle Earl and that glorious museum.

I think T Kingfisher may end up being my favorite author of 2023. I know, a bold thing to say when it's only mid-March, but I think this book has secured that spot. I have loved every book by her, and I can't wait to read more.

Anyway, about the actual book. Let me start by mentioning that I listened to it on audiobook and I think the narrator was perfect. This story managed to be absolutely terrifying while having such levity to it. I've never read anything as unique as this story. The monsters were haunting, the other world was chilling, and the characters were amazing. I was fascinated with every chapter, and though I guessed at one small detail, the rest of the time I was shocked with every turn. The characters managed to be hilarious, even when faced with terror.

I honestly can't say enough about this. This might be the best thing I've read all year. Definitely the best horror book. I already know that my next audible credit will be spent on another T Kingfisher horror book.

This would have been a good book But the language and the cynicism of the characters and one in particular. always have to drag this issue in. storyline was alright but not impressed. narrator was so so.

Disappointing!

I wasn’t expecting such a young adultish storyline. The imagery and language is not YA but the plot definitely is. It’s ok, pretty boring but the narrator did a great job which is probably the only reason I finished it.

More young adult than not

Well written chapters that let your imagination go wild with the creepy scenes. I appreciate that it was more creepy than gore.
