Story
Washington, DC: Twin brothers are found drowned in a Perspex box, one gagged and strapped to a chair. It's the latest in a series of cruel and elaborate murders with two things in common: the killer has left a family history chart at each crime scene, and the victims all have a connection to genealogical sleuth Jefferson Tayte. Hoping his insight and expertise will help solve the case, the FBI summon Tayte back to the capital. But as he struggles to crack the clues, the killer strikes again - and again.

Contrived and boring
Reviewed: 09-22-22
I’m only 2 hours in, but I don’t think I can finish the rest. I’m not sure who thought it was a good idea to make a genealogist the protagonist of a serial killer thriller. It seems like the author is trying and failing at making genealogy exciting. Each step of the plot, so far, comes too easily and feels expected. There’s a murder, then a clue, then an investigation to find the next victim, only to arrive minutes to late. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
I didn’t realize this was a series and maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous ones, but honestly I don’t think I would have made it this far if I had. It just doesn’t make any sense that genealogy could lead anyone kill much less obsess over it to this degree.
I like the narrator in his natural English accent, but his American accent isn’t great and it gets old quickly. Why would they hire someone with an English accent to narrate a book where almost every character is American?
So many things that don’t make sense. None of the characters are interesting or well developed. The book just isn’t good enough to overcome all of this.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

This was a huge disappointment. I was so excited not only for the book, but for the series. It sounded so good! Alas, I couldn’t even finish the book. It was so boring!!! The first book is just the buildup to a huge battle. I don’t know how you make a battle buildup so boring, but it was. There was no character development at all. This was just an excuse for the author to live out his own narcissistic fantasy. The main character is not only the center of the book. He’s the center of the galaxy and it gets really old.

Don’t read if your older than 25. The performance is good, but the writing and performance is really annoying to me. It’s written for youth (teens) and would probably keep them listening, but it was just over to top for me. I couldn’t even continue long enough to get to the real story.

I didn’t find a lot of helpful tips here. It seems like most of what she suggests relies on knowing a good deal about those you are talking to and pretending to be interested or knowledgeable on those subjects. I find a lot of this unrealistic, difficult in most situations, and very insincere. I flat out disagreed with many of her tips on behavior and it makes me wonder if she really is the expert she claims to be.

Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.
