Story
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Story
Join Clara Parkes on a cross-country adventure and meet a cast of characters that includes the shepherds, dyers, and countless workers without whom our knitting needles would be empty, our mills idle, and our feet woefully cold. Travel the country with her as she meets a flock of Saxon Merino sheep in upstate New York, tours a scouring plant in Texas, visits a steamy Maine dyehouse, helps sort freshly shorn wool on a working farm, and learns how wool fleece is measured, baled, shipped, and turned into skeins.

I'm not a knitter, live in a state too warm for anything made of wool, and wasn't sure how I ended up with a book about wool in my library, so I was surprised when I was delighted by the story, the writing, and the voice of Clara Parkes (author and performer). I was mesmerized and have recommended this book to everyone I know who knits, likes and/or wears wool, and to everyone who simply enjoys a great book. I plan on reading all books written by Clara Parkes.

As soon as the last word was read, I wanted to restart this book. The characters were charmingly quirky, there was intrigue, a little romance, family turmoil, and loss all wrapped in a bookstore setting - what could be better? Oh, and the performance was flawless!
