Story
The stockings are hanging ready, the sherry and pies are waiting by the fireplace - but where is the jolly fat man with his sack? It's not right to find Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say 'Ho ho ho'—but someone's got to bring the little kiddies their presents. Or else they might stop believing. Belief is important in Discworld, particularly on the last night of the year when the time is turning. If the real man in the red suit isn't found by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again....

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Story
America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history.

Story
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Story
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries.

these characters don’t read as the appropriate age they’re supposed to be in the story. it wasn’t until the end that i thought maybe if it was an older mona writing a memoir the tone would be align more with the story, but it was distracting. if she didn’t KEEP saying she was only 14 over and over i’d’ve been able to ignore it and write her off as 24. but no, the author wants you to know this is very much a 14 year old wizard. actually, i’m still annoyed and just dropped it another star

Story
There is a comforting illusion shared by historians and political commentators from Fukuyama back to Macaulay, Mill and Marx, that history progresses in a nice straight line towards liberal democracy or socialism, despite the odd hiccup. In reality, every democracy, however sophisticated or stable it may look, has been attacked or actually destroyed by a would-be Caesar, from Ancient Greece to the present day. Marx was wrong. This Caesarism is not an absurd throwback; it is an ever-present danger.

Story
Years ago, when plagues and natural disasters killed millions of people, much of the world stopped dreaming. Without dreams, people are haunted, sick, mad, unable to rebuild. The government soon finds that the Indigenous people of North America have retained their dreams, an ability rumored to be housed in the very marrow of their bones. Soon, residential schools pop up — or are re-opened — across the land to bring in the dreamers and harvest their dreams.

sharp intakes of breath
Reviewed: 07-03-23
i love this story. i am thankful for these novels. but one of the two narrators was hard to handle at times. one point, she took such a sharp, quick breath i thought something dramatic was about to happen, but it was just her breathing. it was weird, and jolting and don’t even remember what the passage was about. i thought maybe i was being finicky about it, but the male narrator does not have the same issue.

there is a background character in the story that is an assault survivor named annabelle bovine. everything just kinda turned into white noise after that… -2 stars for a choice so distracting it took me out of the story completely and was left trying to figure out if it was supposed be some sort of weird joke at the expense of the otherwise more or less voiceless character.

imagine my disappointment when i reached chapter 12 and it was the same narrator of the previous chapter, which was literally. literally. physically painful. NO REASON TO SHOUT, I HAVE HEADPHONES ON.
idk if it was worth suffering thru the last bit. even with the sound turned down her raised voice makes it difficult to listen to.
