About this listen

The first book in the series that has garnered millions of fans across the globe, from New York Times best-selling author Robert Dugoni. Tracy Crosswhite has spent 20 years questioning the facts surrounding her sister Sarah’s disappearance and the murder trial that followed. She doesn’t believe that Edmund House - a convicted rapist and the man condemned for Sarah’s murder- is the guilty party.

Motivated by the opportunity to obtain real justice, Tracy became a homicide detective with the Seattle PD and dedicated her life to tracking down killers. When Sarah’s remains are finally discovered near their hometown in the northern Cascade mountains of Washington State, Tracy is determined to get the answers she’s been seeking.

As she searches for the real killer, she unearths dark, long-kept secrets that will forever change her relationship to her past - and open the door to deadly danger.

Critic reviews

“Dugoni does a superior job of positioning [the plot elements] for maximum impact, especially in a climactic scene set in an abandoned mine during a blizzard - which is melodramatic but nevertheless effective.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Combines the best of a police procedural with a legal thriller, and the end result is outstanding...Dugoni continues to deliver emotional and gut-wrenching, character-driven suspense stories that will resonate with any fan of the thriller genre.” (Library Journal)

“Yes, a conspiracy is revealed, but it’s an unexpected one, as moving as it is startling...The ending is violent, suspenseful, even touching. A nice surprise for thriller fans.” (Booklist, starred review)

Quite good...

To be honest, I didn't really think I was going to like this book, but I've been burning out on epic fantasy and wanted something completely different...
This is a thriller. A murder mystery with, at its heart, a kidnapping and murder thought solved 20 years earlier, but which had forever changed the small town where it had taken place.
And a family, a happy loving family completely devastated by the loss of their talented and daring younger daughter.
I wound up listening to it in one long sitting while in bed with pneumonia and quite enjoyed it. The characters are likable, the plot twists were interesting and unlike many of these books which have endings that dissolve into frantic shoot out scenes, this one stayed suspenseful and readable to the end.

Beautifully written

A great mystery and I loved the telling of it: how the story unfolded. Not sure who the villain was until close to the end.

Did This Come Before Last Dead Girl?

This plot is suspiciously like Harry Dolan's The Last Dead Girl. In fact Dugoni's closing scenes seem to overlay Dolan's sort of perfectly. Hmmmmm.... Maybe one of these writers was a little too vividly inspired by the other's work? Regardless of thef jarring similarity, most of this book seems sufficiently different from Dolan's to have made my listen intriguing. And I quite liked Dolan's story enough to have given it a load of stars. Perhaps, had I listened to this first, well - those stars would be here.

Emily Sutton-Smith is a gifted actress (can I write that anymore, or must I write Actor?) Her ability to create an ensemble while not intruding herself into the narrative is gifted.

Couldn't put it down

I actually was regretting my one hour drive to and from work didn't last longer as this book begged me not to interrupt the story for my nine hour work day. With only 90 minutes or so left, I played it to the end after arriving home tonight-- I couldn't wait for one more day of work to arrive. I hope the next book by this author is just as intriguing and well performed as this one has been.

WOW!

I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book. I found the heroine believable, which is not always the case. the characters were colorful. I plan to read the next in the series as well. ~JTC~

Great read. Not Christian, has 3 "R" rated scenes,

but otherwise strong morally & ethically, harkens back to the classic Western, with a tough, deep, determined, dedicated, tenacious female lead & thoroughly modern police/crime drama/mystery.
Strong, clear. yet intricate plot, full-bodied characters, thrilling & surprising twists, finishing with a satisfying conclusion.

I listened to the 2nd in this series 1st just because it popped up in Kindle Unlimited a few months ago & loved it, so when I saw the rest of the series the other day I grabbed them all!!!

Anyone who likes a good mystery/crime drama will love this one. Male author seems (to this male) to get the female mindset & emotions right (or at least relatable to the male mind, 😎). Robert Dugoni is one author whose work I will be checking out every time I see one!
