Story
Reacher goes where he wants, when he wants. That morning he was heading west, walking under the merciless desert sun — until he comes upon a curious scene. A Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. A woman is slumped over the wheel. Dead? No, nothing is what it seems. The woman is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent trying to find her twin brother, who might be mixed up with some dangerous people. Most of them would rather die than betray their terrifying leader.

Disappointed
Reviewed: 10-02-22
The story line was pedestrian and Reacher’s combat actions unreal. Although he is always portrayed as a one man army these confrontations were too over the top. Also Scott Brick emphasis on every syllable gets boring. He needs to vary his voice so he doesn’t always sound tense and stiff.

This is the sorriest detective action novel I’ve ever read. The events are totally unrealistic and outlandish. Dialogue banal. First book I’ve read by Pinter. My last!

Story
In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

A poetic expression of a life
Reviewed: 10-12-20
Gilbert’s use of language is so eloquent, evocative, and mesmerizing! I listened for the rhythm more than the story. And when I found the story to be a leisurely meandering through Henry and Alma’s lives, I was struck by how much like a normal life it was. No inauthentic climaxes, crazy culminations, or false confluences... just an internal dialogue like my own, filled with misunderstandings, false paths, and insecurities, dotted with love and loss. My affection for Alma snuck up on me, and now that it’s over, I hear her voice in my head, serene and sedate as she was towards the end. Be patient with this novel, and it’s well-researched exploration of botany, exploration, investigation, and humanity. It’s beautifully done!

This Story and particularly this Dewey does not feel human. Poison with such insult to his body functions does not ever interfere with his capacity to do superhuman fighting and extreme physical challenges. And to recover 100% in minutes is pure science fiction. Very disappointing.
