Story
Manhattan, 1850. Born out of wedlock to a wealthy socialite and a nameless immigrant, Cora Lee can mingle with the rich just as easily as she can slip unnoticed into the slums and graveyards of the city. As the only female resurrectionist in New York, she’s carved out a niche procuring bodies afflicted with the strangest of anomalies. Anatomists will pay exorbitant sums for such specimens—dissecting and displaying them for the eager public. Cora’s specialty is not only profitable, it’s a means to keep a finger on the pulse of those searching for her. She’s the girl born with two hearts....

This is my first Lydia Kang novel, and I loved it. An intriguing combination of historical fiction, mystery & a bit of romance. Saskia Maarleveld’s talented voice work gave depth to each character. On to the next!

A light, fun, story 💜

This book was a perfect break from my usual genre. The story flowed at a nice pace & I found the characters endearing. Narration was upbeat & fit the characters well. I’ll definitely be reading the next installments in this series & keeping an ear out for anything else narrated by Jennifer Darnell. Great job!

Story
As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house until one night her stargazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

A bit too far?

This book had my mind so distorted I found myself actually rooting for a relationship built on pedophilia & statutory rape 😳 Kellen was presented as such a gentle, loving presence it was hard to dislike him. I had to stop at several points and reevaluate what was actually happening here. I did finish the book and still have very mixed feelings on it. I agree, the same message could’ve been conveyed with Wavy being older. However, it probably wouldn’t have triggered outrage amongst readers quite the way it did. The narration was beautiful & the characters well developed, but I’m just not sure a boundary wasn’t crossed here.
