Story
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I think Elijah Wood’s performance made it even better. Started getting pretty frustrated with their antics towards the end, but only because I was so drawn into the book lol.

Frank Perretti weaves a good story about something we as humans can all understand. His allegory is on point. Something we should all care very much about, but sadly too many people do not.

My stars went up and down
Reviewed: 05-21-25
The Women started off as a 4 to 4.5 for me. Part 1 was jogging along at a nice pace. Then, we leaped chasms into Part 2. A lot of Part 2 veered into the 3 to 3.5 star range, but back up to a solid 4 in the end.

Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

I haven’t enjoyed a book this much in a long time. I didn’t want it to end and I can’t wait for the sequel! Vis is brave, humble, and capable. Just how I like my heros. Very appreciative of the complete lack of bad cursing and explicit romantic scenes! Just a good adventure.

Five Star…but…
Reviewed: 04-13-25
Any book that I don’t want to end will get a five star from me, but as good as this book is it did not have the depth and richness of the original Hunger Games trilogy. I wanted to feel more, connect more, but unfortunately much of the story fell flat for me. It is still good though and I’m glad I got to hear his story.

Bleak, but an overall good story.

I listened to this on a trip with my husband. We both enjoyed this book. My impression of the book now that it’s over though is a little oppressive, probably because of the desolate, inhospitable setting. I’m not sure if I will read the next in the series.

But the force that’s sweeping the world is no pathogen. It’s just the first shock wave, unleashed by a stunning discovery - and what’s in jeopardy is not our minds but the very fabric of time itself. In New York City, Detective Barry Sutton is closing in on the truth - and in a remote laboratory, neuroscientist Helena Smith is unaware that she alone holds the key to this mystery...and the tools for fighting back.

I started this book, but put it down after the first chapter because it was a little depressing and I wasn’t in the right mind frame. Glad I went back to it! Once I got into the story, I couldn’t put it down. Wild ride for sure. I really cared about the MCs by the end of the book.

Every child's potential is regularly determined by a standardized measurement: their quotient (Q). Score high enough, and attend a top tier school with a golden future. Score too low, and it's off to a federal boarding school with limited prospects afterwards. Elena Fairchild is a teacher at one of the state's elite schools. When her nine-year-old daughter bombs a monthly test and her Q score drops to a disastrously low level, she is immediately forced to leave her top school for a federal institution hundreds of miles away. Elena's perspective is changed forever.
