Too many characters without enough substance
Reviewed: 06-16-25
I found the plot to be boring and unnecessarily tedious with all the random characters. The overall story was pretty cliche, without any compelling high level story or unique twists. I wanted to like this, but I just couldn’t get into it.

A sex-obsessed cultural tale
Reviewed: 11-11-24
I liked the Damon character, but the story of set in a world where folks own slaves and is nonstop obsessed with sex. It’s kind of ridiculous to the point that the characters are not relatable.

This is a fascinating new type of magic woven into a world of political turmoil and deception. The characters are interesting and well thought out. A fun read, though somewhat bland in parts.

Fun story, average narration
Reviewed: 02-18-23
The narrator has a great voice, but he does this thing at the end of Fabian’s sentence where every comment comes off as a question (or as though Fabian is winded from running up a set of stairs).
If the narrator could change this one issue with inflection, it’d be perfect.

Good story, rushed & monotoned narrator.
Reviewed: 09-02-22
The narration nearly ruined this one. The speaker was monotoned, which isn’t necessarily always a bad thing; however, here, the narrator was rushing between sentences. This made it difficult to distinguish between a change in characters or a pívot in the POV or the plot.
Several times, I had to pause & rewind to assess which pronouns referred to whom.
Otherwise, a fun story. Probably a story better read than told.

This is one of those few stories that I wish was much longer, just to have more time with these characters. This author’s description of the sexual scenes is direct and realistic, which adds to the overall feeling of the book.
The narrator was great and struck the perfect tone.

This was my first “omegaverse” book. I’m not sure what I expected, but Wow! What an great introduction to the genre.
The narrator’s deep voice was mesmerizing. I played it at speed .9x, and that made it all the more emotional.
The story and writing were beautiful. Highly recommend.

Story
Emery Hazard and his partner, John-Henry Somerset, have solved their first case together. The brutal murders that rocked the quiet town of Wahredua have been put to rest. Hazard, however, finds his life has only grown more complicated as he adjusts to his new home. Living with Somers, whom he has been drawn to since high school, makes "complicated" the understatement of the year.

The underlying mystery was not compelling, and the characters were very flat. This has me debating whether to continue with the series, which is sad, because I love Hazard & Somers.

Wayyyy too drawn out. Lagniappe
Reviewed: 03-13-22
Compared to the other books in this series, Brothersong was a meandering, sappy re-hashing of all the past relationships. I almost DNF but pushed through for closure.
This story could have been cut by 75%.
Much of the dialogue was irrelevant - or the mushy musings of the prior, dead characters. I consider this book superfluous to the series. Lagniappe really.

There are no words to describe how absolutely horrible and out of nowhere this story unraveled. To say I was very upset with the ending would be an understatement. I will give book #2 a start in the hopes that the author reconciles this aberrant character arc.
