Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

I bought this audio book, because of the good reviews. I have tried and tried, but fell a sleep after 5 minutes of listening, which was good since I have sleeping problems. I finally got to finish 1 hour and 27 seconds, but the story and the narrator aren't for me.

Disappointed
Reviewed: 02-07-13
I read in a review that: “if you love the Outlander series and or Charles Dickens, you will LOVE this book”. That did it for me and I spend my credit. Perhaps in comparison with Charles Dickens but the book you can’t compare with the Outlander series!!!!
I stopped when I have listened almost 2 parts. Then I decided to read some more reviews. Mostly excellent reviews, however a few more like what I experienced.
I also read: “Characters that appear and then disappear once they have served their purpose”.
Then I thought why bother to listen to the other 2,5 part.
Narrator did a good job.

I don't know if it's just me, but I couldn't get a good start in this book.
I took this book because I LOVED Possession and the Children's book was a nice LONG book. However wayyyy too long for me. It seems.
It took me ages to get listenend to the first 4 hours. I have started over and over again. I did tried, because I have read all those great reviews.
So I think it must be just me!!!

Story
Believing that a good, interesting life is marked by quality, not quantity, John Steinbeck took note of his itchy feet and prepared to travel. He was accompanied by his French poodle Charley, diplomat and watchdog, across the states of America from Maine to California. Moving through woods and forests, dirt tracks and highways to large cities and wildernesses, Steinbeck observed America and the Americans with a humorous and sometimes sceptical eye.

The story is nice. I like traveling through the USA.
However I didn't dare to listen in the car while driving, because in bed after 5 minutes I was fast a sleep. It took me ages to get those few hours of listening ended.

Not what I had in mind

The narrator did an excellent job (as always). However I was disappointed about the book itself. I though I had downloaded a nice Susan Elizabeth Phillips book. Great to listen to in bed, when I wasn’t feeling all right. However it wasn’t a story like all the other books of her. I clearly didn’t read all the other review before buying it. Otherwise I could have known it was a different kind of story. Definitely not a story ‘for escapism’ as I have read afterwards on another review.

Facing crises of career and heart, two of the most powerful corporate figures in the Northwest are now borne by the currents of fate to the same small Washington town, and to their respective shops - a bookstore for Charity and a small curiosity shop for Elias. As Charity and Elias begin a cautious exploration of each other's pasts, hidden agendas, and libidos, they discover one thing they definitely have in common: a martial arts master, he's a novice at relationships; a formidable executive, she's starting in the mailroom when it comes to love.

A lovely audiobook, well written and a very nice reading voice. I have listened to other audiobooks by Elizabeth Phillips and I like them all. However I would have known that this was the first in a kind of series. You can listen to them separately, but I would start with this one.
