Merritt Fernsby’s life has changed considerably since he inherited Whimbrel House. He’s engaged to Hulda Larkin, who opened his eyes to the uncanny. And he’s grown quite protective of his uncle Owein—several generations, and iterations, removed. Owein is presently inhabiting the body of a mixed-breed terrier when Merritt receives a missive from none other than Alexandrina Victoria, the Queen of England: I am interested in your dog.

It’s hard to get used to Hilda’s stiffness but she is becoming more playful. Such an interesting twist to think of magic being so integral to English life and I liked the interjection of Druids into the story

Story
A long-buried family secret resurfaces when one of Aloysius Pendergast's most implacable enemies shows up on his doorstep as a murdered corpse. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect murder, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the deceased. The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California's desolate Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his family's sinister past.

This was my first listen by Preston & Childs - I struggled a little at first to get used to Pendergast’s unusual characteristics, but by a quarter into the book I was hooked by the dramatic story line and toward the end I was rushing to finish.
