Story
The Handmaid's Tale meets Wilder Girls in this genre-defying novel about a girl who escapes a terrifying cult only to discover that the world Outside has succumbed to a viral apocalypse. Agnes loves her home of Red Creek - its quiet, sunny mornings, its dusty roads, and its God. There, she cares tirelessly for her younger siblings and follows the town's strict laws. What she doesn't know is that Red Creek is a cult, controlled by a madman who calls himself a prophet.

After a riveting start, sadly disappointing and too religious
Reviewed: 07-22-24
The first half was terrific despite some quibbles I had with characterization and instalove. It was a real page turner! But then people start being magically healed with divine intervention, and I was not expecting this to be a Christian book. It was just way too easy that the pandemic was basically solved by God through Agnes the prophet. There were certain characters who really should have died to lend the story more reality and gravitas, but it was magic cures all around. Just wasn’t at all what I was expecting. There should’ve been a real sense of threat and danger, but there wasn’t. I do appreciate that this version of religion and God is not anti-science, but it’s just not for me. Talk about a deus ex machina solving their problems! I was rolling my eyes a lot near the end, which is a shame because the first part was very compelling. Great narration though—the narrator is why I bought the book in the first place.

Sayers’s character arc was so satisfying. The middle of the book while he was in captivity dragged a bit, but it was absolutely necessary for the story and his transformations. The repetitiveness was so effective. And I absolutely loved his unexpected friendship in the third act. I have a few quibbles: I really wanted to see more with Luke, and too many characters were just awful to him. The lack of support given to him strained my disbelief. But it really was a compelling book, and I stayed up way too late to finish it!

Really fantastic book. I loved the characters and the narration was wonderful. An excellent example of how human narrators can bring a story to life in a way a computer will never be able to.

I always love Sophie Kinsella, but I did find Fixie and her family extremely frustrating. Fixie is such a doormat and her family and initial love interest are cartoonishly awful. But Sebastian was great, and Fiona Hardingham was wonderful as always. Her performance is so good that I kept listening.

Fantastic book about the institutional oppression/abuse of the patriarchy and white supremacy. While it’s specifically about Hollywood, so much of what is examined takes place in all sectors of our society. Bravo to Ryan for shining a light. Also, I fully admit I enjoy gossip, and there are some juicy (and enraging) tales.
