The worst audiobook I’ve listened to
Reviewed: 09-14-24
This has to be one of the worst stories and performances I’ve heard. I bought the book because I have listened to and enjoyed other stories by Irina Shapiro. The story line is flimsy and the characters are one dimensional. Because there is no depth to the story, it’s hard to get pulled into. The narrator sounds like she’s reading young adult fiction, but with little emotion and a horrible fake British accent. Just don’t bother.

Patrick Hinds has failed. A lot. In fact, he’s kind of an expert at it—which is why he’s uniquely qualified to say that failure is a good thing.

I had high hopes that this book would be hilarious, as Patrick has told some really funny stories in the podcast Obsessed with Disappeared. Some of the stories are revamped from the podcast, others are new, but not really that funny. Maybe that’s because a lot the humor in the storytelling on the podcasts comes from the interaction that his cohost Ellyn brought. Speaking of Ellyn, supposedly they were good friends since college to the point that he officiated her wedding and she spearhead the effort to collect baby supplies when his foster/adopted daughter arrived with basically zero notice and then they went on to cohost a massively successful podcast together. There were only two brief mentions of her in the book. So weird. This book is not worth the price.

Story
Only the most hardened survivalists can endure living in the scorched deadlands of the former state of Arizona. Among them is nineteen-year-old Georgia Reno, who lives in an isolated desert settlement with her father and younger brother. Roads don’t exist here; visitors are more dark fairy tale than reality. But when two mysterious strangers arrive on their land, Georgia begins to question her sheltered existence. Soon, her tentative curiosity blooms into a fledgling desire to leave the settlement, even if it means venturing into a world her father has only ever warned against.

But it never did. There was so much potential, but it was just such a snoozer.
