Enjoyable but short, more silly than scary
Reviewed: 07-14-14
What made the experience of listening to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow the most enjoyable?
The story is funny and exciting, I wish it were longer. The story is silly rather than scary. I think Hollywood has turned it into a nightmare situation when the real story is much more comedic. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration was fine, average.
If you could take any character from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow out to dinner, who would it be and why?
The main character would be fun to chat with.
Any additional comments?
I liked it a lot, I only wish it were longer.

Story
This is a story from the Fall of the House of Usher collection. The horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, with its dungeon of death, and the overhanging gloom on the House of Usher demonstrate unforgettably the unique imagination of Edgar Allan Poe. Unerringly, he touches upon some of our greatest nightmares: Premature burial, ghostly transformation, words from beyond the grave. Written in the 1840s, they have retained their power to shock and frighten even now.

Would you try another book from Edgar Allan Poe and/or William Roberts?
Probably not.
Would you recommend The Masque of the Red Death to your friends? Why or why not?
No, unless you are a Poe fan then there is no reason to read this.
Would you listen to another book narrated by William Roberts?
Sure.
Could you see The Masque of the Red Death being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
It probably has, but its too short to be anything other than a short tv episode, unless they take a lot of liberties.
Any additional comments?
It is interesting if you like Poe, if you don't then skip it.

Story
The bloody-minded Montresor leads the pompous Fortunato deep into the catacombs, seeking the famed Amontillado wine. Here we have one of Poe’s most terrifying, and most “beloved” tales. Revenge and pomposity commingle beneath the river’s bed, leading to a delightfully sinister conclusion.

It's alright
Reviewed: 07-14-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It could go either way. I didn't dislike it, but I didn't like it. It was an interesting read for class, but nothing that I ever would have read otherwise. It was more interesting than some of his other writings.
Would you recommend The Cask of Amontillado to your friends? Why or why not?
Sure, if I had a friend that loved Poe in general then I would recommend this short.
What aspect of B.J. Harrison’s performance would you have changed?
The performance was pretty spot on in my opinion, very animated. There are some better performances and readings (even dramatizations) on YouTube available for free.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No, of course not. But I did see a funny dramatization and reading on YouTube with the actor that played the dad in the Home Alone movies. It was better than listening to this in my opinion.
Any additional comments?
Read it if you are a Poe fan, if not then pass.

Story
The Minister's Black Veil was first published in the 1836 edition of The Token and Atlantic Souvenir. It later appeared in Twice-Told Tales, a collection of short stories by Hawthorne published in 1837. Hawthorne's inspiration for this story may have been a true event. A clergyman named Joseph Moody of York, Maine, nicknamed "Handkerchief Moody", accidentally killed a friend when he was a young man and wore a black veil from the man's funeral until his own death.

One of those "why do I have to read this" books
Reviewed: 07-14-14
What disappointed you about The Minister's Black Veil?
There was pretty much nothing interesting in the story to me. The writing was good, but the story was not compelling. I'm not a fan of this style, why read this one when there are more interesting stories by other authors in this same genre.
What could Nathaniel Hawthorne have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Had a better conclusion.
What didn’t you like about Walter Zimmerman’s performance?
The performance was fine, I think he did the best possible with this source material.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The quality of the writing was very high, just not a good story.
Any additional comments?
Skip it unless you have to read it for school.

Boring, stopped reading after 8 hours
Reviewed: 07-14-14
What would have made Red Rabbit better?
A more interesting story would have been nice. The beginning was fun, but it quickly became boring. Nothing interesting happened in the first 8 hours of listening so I put it down. The other reviews calling this a slow boring book were correct. I only read it because I wanted to read all of the Jack Ryan books in order, but I just can't do this one. I read the previous books in the series and I have enjoyed all of them so far. I read Rainbow Six when I was a kid and I really enjoyed it.
What could Tom Clancy have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
A more condensed version of this book might be better.
What aspect of Scott Brick’s performance would you have changed?
The performance was fine, average.
Any additional comments?
Its just not one of the good ones, skip to the next one in the series in my opinion.

Where does Angels and Demons rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It is one of the better books that I've read, probably in the top ten or twenty.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main character is very interesting and great to follow and learn from.
Have you listened to any of Richard Poe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This performance is good, not great, average to above average.
Any additional comments?
I loved this novel, it was much better than The Davinci Code in my opinion, though code is very good two. The two most recent books in the series were less interesting and boring at times. This is one of my favorite books, I would recommend it to anyone.

Yes, probably. This book was better than the movie as it had more details, background information, and internal thoughts, but that doesn't mean its a good book...
Would you be willing to try another book from R.A. Salvatore? Why or why not?
Yes, it was fine.
What does Jonathan Davis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He is alright, not bad, not great.
Did Star Wars Episode II inspire you to do anything?
No way.
Any additional comments?
This book is good if you love Star Wars, there is some additional information and detail in the novelization that makes the story a bit better, however it wasn't a particularly compelling story to begin with...

This book was good and worth reading. The characters are good and the story is interesting. The sequels are not very good in my opinion. Maybe they are making authors sign a three book deal even though they only have a good idea for one book. Anyways, I liked this one, but I recommend skipping the sequels.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. I loved the movie, and I love the book as well. The book is harder to follow than the movie, especially the way it under describes certain things. The movie actually makes the book make more sense, I recommend reading the novel second. The movie is just more organized and easier to follow than the book. I saw the movie first so this is just my opinion, I could see the book being confusing to an unfamiliar reader. Anyways, love the characters and story, a must read!!!
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main character is very relatable to be.
Did Jim Colby do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes, the reader did a good job, not the best, but not bad.
If you could take any character from Fight Club out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Tyler would probably convince me to join his cult...
Any additional comments?
If you love the movie then read the book. If you have not seen the movie, then see it, then read the book.
