Story
The folklore roots of Christmas under its many other guises (Yule, the Winter Solstice, Saturnalia) is examined in a different, darker light. The Winter Solstice is a time to be afraid. It’s the shortest day of the year, the longest night. In some parts of the world, the sun doesn’t rise at all. It’s dark, and we have to wonder if the sun will ever come back at all. Christmas has always been creepy and with The Fright Before Christmas, you'll see that side. This is a book for everyone who loves a little darkness around the holidays.

Story
Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home. These shiver-inducing tales introduce listeners to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge.

Brutal Slasher Flick in book form
Reviewed: 09-23-22
I have passion for all things Halloween. I absolutely love supernatural horror. In this world that is so full of awful things, scary stuff that can be left behind in a book, is my jam.
This book is not in that category.
This book is absolutely brutal. Rape, murder, severe beatings, infanticide, it is all in there.
If you're looking for a Halloween story that is "spooky" and seasonal, this isn't it.
Every year starting in September I start reading and listening to Halloween themed books to get in the Halloween spirit. Every day life is full of brutality, watch the news, read the news, listen to the news.
My horror fascination seeps with escapism. I want to enter a world that is filled with wonder and the supernatural to take a break from real horror that the world is seeped in. This is a slasher book. It is not for me. It being about Halloween and having a supernatural angle, I've tried over several years to finish it. I can't do it. Even in small quantities I had to tap out. If sheer brutality, gore, and blood is your thing, this book is for you.

Like an old radio program
Reviewed: 09-22-22
The performance had a lot of thought put into it. It sounded like an old radio program, different voices, creepy sounds, creaking doors. I liked that vintage atmosphere very much. However, the breaks between story lines were too long. I kept thinking is it over? Then my mind would wander and then it would start again. When I was thinking to myself, did I miss something because I have absolutely no idea what is going on in this story, I was quite happy to find out, the story is designed that way so the twist ending is harder to figure out. If you love old radio programs absolutely give this one a try.

Story
The author whose boundless imagination and storytelling powers have redefined the horror genre, from 1974’s Carrie to his new epic Under the Dome, reflects on the very nature of terror—what scares us and why—in films (both cheesy and choice), television and radio, and, of course, the horror novel, past and present.

Thoughts of a god
Reviewed: 08-31-22
What does a god think of the creations of other gods? Musings from the mouth of a god, performed by William Dufris, who I now wish had performed every horror novel I've ever read. The short passages he performs are absolutely incredible. I found myself lost so intensely in his narrative I wanted to read each book IMMEDIATELY. This book and performance have achieved exactly what is intended, I will be seeking out each recommendation. I would listen to William Dufris read grocery lists, especially if Stephen King wrote them.

Story
In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story.

Seriously spooked
Reviewed: 07-20-22
I read The Fisherman a few years back. I was immediately drawn in. I finished it in one day. I had found a new author that awakened the desire to read everything he had written. I have now read several of his novels and various short stories, all with the same ability to immediately hook. I realized, after reading his newest compilation of short stories that I wanted to revisit this story. I figured audible would be the perfect medium. I was not disappointed. The older voice added the perfect timbre. The story was even spookier. I can see the nods to Pet Semetary and also to the Cthulu mythos, and yet, none of the story is a rehash. I loved it. I will definitely be reading and listening again.

Story
Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy. Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.

Deeply Disappointed
Reviewed: 07-16-22
I'm wondering about the marketing of this book. I've read rave reviews about how terrifying it is. This is Nancy Drew level fright with a Scooby Doo mystery. So disappointed. The only adult theme, addiction, is also approached like an after school special. Can't believe this is the summer release everyone is enamored of.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.
