Story
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Exquisite detail among the horrors of war.
Reviewed: 11-08-24
Doerr uses the blindness of his heroine to present the exquisite detail that surrounds her, using senses we use only to skim the surface of our lives. Without this beauty, we would be overcome with the atrocities of WW II.
Feeling the enormity of being a single parent to his blind daughter, her father teaches her to use her mind and her senses to move through life, literally and figuratively.
The book was long and tedious in places but overall I enjoyed it immensely. A skilled writer created a masterpiece.

An astounding account of a nurse in a war. Best to me was the way the feelings of the characters were expressed each as different as the people themselves.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A cultural revelation.

Alka Joshi deftly wove the complex story through several cultures. The discussions about foods and customs and architecture and the arts richly enhanced the stories. The character development and the underlying theme of women coming of age were a bonus. The best set of books I've heard in many years
