Story
It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was. She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

Taken aback!

I wasn't prepared for this story, but I'm so glad I listened to it. It took me back to my work in a child advocacy center and family/criminal courts in the US.
I was reminded of the time that I had to look at the bruised face and blackened eyes of a 5 yr while we waited to interview her about her injuries.
I had to conjure the strength to play with her as if everything were ok, when it wasn't. In this case, it was also a case of an overworked underpaid young mother that left her kids in the care of a boyfriend while she worked because she couldn't afford childcare.
This story touches on so many issues and how they impact not only a family, but a community.
Thank you for being brave enough to breathe life into these stories.

Story
Detectives Coleen Clayton and Lester Pruitt are searching for a missing person when they turn up a dead body. Fitting into a pattern of gruesome homicides hitting South Carolina, the case bears an unnerving resemblance to one from 30 years ago—one that still haunts Exeter. The killer has become a legend, spawning countless ghost stories and Halloween costumes. A killer named Crouchback. But Crouchback died in prison 30 years ago, right?

I didn't connect with this story at all and called it quits after an hour.
The story was a ramble, perhaps that was the point- to be lost in ones mind and words!?!?
The line about the " white women raped by black gangs" was a very poor use of words. It added no value to the story and was utterly distasteful.
Words, even in a bad story matter!
The only redeeming quality was the narrator- her voice was lovely.

Hmmmmm, is the narrator a person or bot!??!? This story was tragically bad and the narrator worse. The narrator read this as if it were a rom-com with light-hearted humor, it was so confusing and terrible. Please redo with a different narrator, it might be a better book.

When Zikora, a DC lawyer from Nigeria, tells her equally high-powered lover that she’s pregnant, he abandons her. But it’s Zikora’s demanding, self-possessed mother, in town for the birth, who makes Zikora feel like a lonely little girl all over again. Stunned by the speed with which her ideal life fell apart, she turns to reflecting on her mother’s painful past and struggle for dignity. Preparing for motherhood, Zikora begins to see more clearly what her own mother wants for her, for her new baby, and for herself.

Visceral, real, and beautiful

This story is so important and beautifully written. The daughter becomes the mother and has a very real reality check about life, parenting, motherhood, love, loss, rejection, and womanhood. She becomes the reflection of her mother whom she thought weak, as she faces the truths about choices, controlled circumstances, freedoms and the loss of each.
I don't have enough words to describe how powerful the truths of this story sound.
Simply Brilliant!
