I was not expecting this. Great mystery but so much more. It’s very funny. Very. The author is a therapist so there are self-helpish tips throughout if you want to take a moment and reflect on them. Or you can just read on as the book moved very quickly. Great characters - kept thinking one person was the culprit then another. Had me fooled. The narrator gives each character a distinct voice and they really come alive. Great fun and more.

Totally enjoyed this. I am not a baseball fan but was totally taken with the story and well developed characters. The narrator really brought the book to life. Very funny, very insightful as I learned baseball is a metaphor for life, and completely fooled me. Excellent all around the bases.

Story
When a musician client asks David to accompany him to the 1982 US Festival, death is the last thing on his mind. Angry groupies can be passionate, sure, but murder? Nah. David’s optimism is swiftly rocked and rolled when exotic drugs and death appear as supporting acts and the festival mood shifts. Even the lovely Lilah can’t distract David from reality. His client needs help. He has to act. Flexing his sleuthing muscles, David noodles around from one thing to another. Info is sketchy, and time is running out—the bass isn’t the only thing dropping as more bodies are found.

So enjoyed listening to this. The narrator is first rate and brings the characters to life as he builds the tension while getting you to laugh and sing your way through the book. The author is a therapist and sprinkles self-help tips throughout that never take away from the story. I couldn’t figure out whodunit but once it was disclosed I could see how it all tied together. Totally enjoyed the cultural references to the time (80’s) and, of course, the songs. Great book.

Story
While reluctantly attending a therapist conference, David is relieved to find escape from his colleagues when a random stranger asks for his help. But curiosity can be a curse. He’s unwittingly drawn into a family feud, and doesn’t need to attend classes to know these never end well. Sure enough, people start dying, and a cryptic note, snarky siblings, and an intimidating wine magnate all conspire to test David’s sleuthing abilities—and his breaking-and-entering skills. A class for this might be more beneficial.

Very much enjoyed this romp through a therapy conference in Santa Barbara. Lots of tricks of the trade that are shared in the context of the story. The author has a self-deprecating sense of humor and a gentle yet critical eye on his profession. The mystery totally stumped me. I enjoy the various references to what was popular at the time (mid 80’s). The narrator is exceptional, making the characters distinct and relatable. Great listening.

The ninth instalment of the popular Lesson series–featuring therapist, professor, and reluctant sleuth David Unger. David’s chakras are stimulated, and he takes a skeptical step into the unknown when he’s asked to support at the Santa Monica Whole Life Expo–bad juju is coming, and positive therapeutic auras are required. Murder soon spoils the cosmic karma, and with the posse on hand to spice up the mystic mix, David’s sleuthing leads him to places he’s never been before and most likely won’t return to.

Really enjoyed and valued this book. I liked the setting of this book as I once lived in Southern California and cultural references brought back good feelings. One thing I particularly liked was was the integration of therapeutic insights and the therapist’s viewpoint. Plus there was a lot of humor which made the listening easy. The narrator made the different characters come alive. Can’t wait to listen to the next.

David Unger’s stream of consciousness in the main character helps the reader not only understand the protagonist but we get a look inside the writer and ourselves. The book is sexy and humble, tense and funny. David’s journey to the last two chapters points out how being jaded and having a lack of empathy can be deadly. The best part of the ending was how David Unger helped us understand the power of restorative justice and women’s issues.

More than 300,000 people sweltered in the San Bernardino desert at the 1982 US Festival featuring Tom Petty, the Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac, and Jackson Browne, among others. David, a therapist and professor, was there to support a nervous client, a musician who was going to perform at the festival. Indeed, he had reason to worry.

A trip down music and love lane
Reviewed: 01-06-19
David Unger was able to help me imagine what I missed at Woodstock in the 60's with his in-depth knowledge of brilliant song writers and performers along with the groupies and the drugs that held us together in a time we questioned everything.
If you are a fan of Hunter Thompson, Jackson Browne, The Dead or any rock music, along with fantasies of romance you will love this mystery.
As a therapist, I enjoyed the character of David using known therapeutic techniques to gather information while joining with the cast of characters....techniques that also work to get closer with a love interest.
The book is a fun and an easy read as the clues unfold. Enjoy!
