This story was a very exciting story. Normally I do not prefer more than one narrator in an audio book. But for Joshilyn Jackson I would forgive the other sounds. I rarely read thrillers. That said, I love her voice as an author and the characters she creates are plausible and well-developed. I have not yet found a novel of hers that I did not like and enjoy reading/listening to.

Story
There is little more terrifying than those who hunt, stalk, and snatch their prey under the cloak of darkness. These hunters search not for animals, but for the touch, taste, and empowerment of human flesh. They are cannibals, vampires, and monsters, and they walk among us. These serial killers are not mythical beasts with horns and shaggy hair. They are people living among society, going about their day-to-day activities until nightfall. They are the Dennis Rader's, the fathers, husbands, church-going members of the community.

I enjoy reading all kinds of books. True crime is intriguing because it delves into the psychology of what makes criminals become more than petty burglars or misbehaving miscreants. This audible book was mostly interesting. My only real complaint am was when certain crimes were repeated in the format and the lists were so very long that it was practically useless as information because you couldn’t fathom the fact that all were committed within one serial killer’s repertoire. One recitation for the audio book would have been sufficient. Just saying. I believe it was the doctor (Shipman?) whose list went on for over fifteen minutes! I may be exaggerating, but it became monotonous and soporific after the first ten names the first time (and the format listed them more than once).
As for interpretation and information, I found it had many details that I did not already know or hadn’t heard before. So I rate it high on informative content.

The story is brilliant. I first read it in the early nineties on a plane (devoured it and shared it with a fellow passenger who introduced me to another author I eventually devoured book by book- but that is a story for a different review).
This book was intriguing and more interesting with an audio track. The narrator made it an interesting listen and in my opinion gave it a whole different experience than my first reading. Now I would like to speak to a character profile that some have mentioned in their reviews—the female child.
Her annoyance was actually more genuine than most might think. The way a child her age may react to things was mostly accurate. Children that age are often impetuous and imperfect (that’s a trying age). And remember that her interest and focus would be of a child more than an adolescent or adult. The character in this book served to keep the stress-level high. It worked beautifully in my opinion. But anyone who had no experience with kids in the third-fourth grade age group would not comprehend their general behavior or see the reasoning. Crichton used her childish behavior to increase the level of tension and change the dynamic of the story, create peril and concern and make the reader more involved than they realize. This was clear to me, but I have worked with that age group and have raised both sexes through the trying years when they learn from experience and base decision on intrinsic feelings rather than reason and rational behaviors.
Crichton was a brilliant writer and his grasp of science, chaos and behavior of animals and people made his work fascinatingly fabulous. I will definitely enjoy his works again in audio format for the newish experience of a narrated story. Worth the listen.

Story
A woman disappears on her way to work. A man is convicted of her murder. But this case is different. Though the police believe they have the right man, key components of the prosecution case are missing. There is no body of the victim, no witnesses to the crime, no confession and no physical evidence: no DNA, CCTV or murder weapon.

While listening to this, I think my expectations were that some revelation would be given at the end to show how innocence or guilt defied the forensic evidence. But the lack of any revelation to prove that innocence or guilt is, for me, beyond frustrating. Maybe if I’d known that there was no resolution to whether this person was wrongfully convicted or that a jury keenly discerned credible guilt without any concrete forensic proof, I would have chosen differently.
That said, the voices of the narrators, their thoughts and the decision to pass no judgement for or against but merely to be unbiased in their expose of what could and could not be known were all exemplary. This is why I gave the full marks for performance. It was as median and unbiased as I’ve ever seen or heard in a journalistic/documentarian piece. For that alone it merits the average of four stars.
If you expect closure, though, this is not the audiobook you want. If you are fine drawing your own conclusion based on scientific documentary evidence, then this IS the book you want.

Story
Spanning eras and cultures from ancient Rome to medieval England to 1950s Hollywood, Jennifer Wright's It Ended Badly guides you through the worst of the worst in historically bad breakups. In the throes of heartbreak, Emperor Nero had just about everyone he ever loved - from his old tutor to most of his friends - put to death. Oscar Wilde's lover, whom he went to jail for, abandoned him when faced with being cut off financially from his wealthy family.

First. I liked the story. It was interesting and has sparked my need for more information (which as any writer of historical expose will tell you is the sincerest form of flattery of their work). That said, I would much prefer to read a book like this, with humor embedded in the side notes and anecdotes, and create my own animated voice for the narrator (rather than have the narrator’s nasal, nay almost monotone voice drying it out and not appealing to those of us who find the sound of a “polished society voice”, one without any real inflection bordering on emotion, as abhorrent as the behavior of many of the spurned lovers in this book. I had to force myself not to turn this off until I was embedded in the narrative. And while this voice talent may have been what the audible originals’ talent agents wanted to showcase, for me I would have much preferred a more neurotic, emotional narration to this, which to me always sounded like it was being read by a disinterested party rather than someone invested in the premise of lives lost and denied and the insanity that ensued.
This may well be a personal preference, therefore you will note that my overall rating is still a solid four stars. I only disliked the performance, but the story was wildly entertaining. So my advice, if you love audible humor told with a humorous voice, read this on the page and let your own imagination narrate it as you desire.

What happened to the real story?
Reviewed: 04-15-19
First of all, this will have spoilers...so beware. Having read all of Ms. Kleypas’s work (to the best of my knowledge) and being a re-reader (not ashamed to say books for me are like friends-I visit them often each year and add new ones as often), I was stunned by missing plot elements in this audiobook! What happened to the real reason Amelia was sour on marriage? What happened to the jewels? Where was the real climax of the story? I was almost angry that my friend-book was altered from what I knew and loved! It was like seeing an old friend who looks good on the surface but then finding out they had a secret addiction or were now a low-life degenerate where before they’d been clean-living, loyal and good.
The narrator was, as usual, very good at creating a persona of voice for each character. However, I will not be so quick to waste my credits or cash on the series if I feel they will not be the stories so beloved in my heart. Just tell it as written, don’t abridge or remove important elements. That won’t make fans come back for more.
