Not enjoying this format…too much english and long paragraphs
Reviewed: 06-03-24
I would have returned this but ran out of time. Way too many long translations (of very long paragraphs of bizarre situations) in English, hard to follow in audible format (way too long to remember what was said at beginning to attempt to translate in French as you listen along). A miss for me.

Great story and French practice!
Reviewed: 01-16-23
Really enjoyed the overall story (minus the violence/murder aspects), especially the characters of Jack and George. Would like another similar volume of this book (at the same level) to practice more. I wish the table of conversational connectors at the beginning of the book included ALL those used in the book. Also, I would like to see definitions of ALL the words bolded throughout the stories defined at the end (or in table at beginning) and don’t follow why they were not? Loved the chapter quizzes, the first 5 were story comprehension (did better on those!) and the second 5 were grammar in general (for these would really appreciate a brief explanation with the answer as have no idea why I got wrong those that I did so you can’t really learn from mistakes). Also, the quizzes in English could use a proofing by native speaker as there were quite a few errors (for example, p168 on 2c “no quarter” does not translate and means nothing in this context. Also, a lot of “that” sentence should be “this” sentence, etc. Also, just general mistakes like p173 reference to George should be Ruffin, and p175 #8 “sans doute” repeated in sentence.
Overall, it was enjoyable and I liked to read the story from paperback version first and then listen along to it again with audible version after. For those of you who are only listening along to audible version, I encourage you to also get the paperback so you can read along.

Story
As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism.

Although a U2 fan since 1985, I was somehow surprised by the completely enchanting delivery of Bono’s story (spoken by Bono). I not only learned so much about his life’s journey, the band, the music, charity, but also more about life and how to live in general. What an amazing storyteller! And his spot on impressions of so many people whose paths he crossed made for such a delightful listen. I can’t recommend this audible book enough. Even if you know nothing about U2 or their music, it’s an entirely compelling listen. Thank you, Bono, for sharing!

Please fix chapter headings!
Reviewed: 09-19-22
Great tool (also read/listened to the beginner level), BUT the chapter headings are impossible to follow as currently set up. All chapters are lumped into “the six step reading process” and there is no way to find individual chapters making it impossible to find a specific chapter and move around. PLEASE FIX as otherwise this is a great audible!!!!!

Really enjoyed this one. I bought the hard copy book and would read each chapter and them follow up with listening to each one with audible as I read along. It really helped and I learned a lot throughout the course of the book/audible. The stories are actually interesting and well written as well and I found myself looking forward to reading them each weekend. The audible narrator is also excellent. The only confusing thing is that it isn’t clear in audible that the accompanying pdf only contains each chapter synopsis and quiz (not the whole story). So, the audible version does not contain the entire book, you would need to buy that separately as I did if you want to read along. Would also be helpful to include chapter headings in audible (instead of just numbers). Here they are:
1-4 = La Ratatouille Folle
5-7 = La Creature
8-10 = Le Chevalier
11-13 = La Montreal
14-16 = Le Coffre
17-19 = Terres Inconnues
20-22 = Laure, la femme invisible
23-25 = La Capsule

Story
Most people know Andrew McCarthy from his movie roles in Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire, Weekend at Bernie's, and Less Than Zero, and as a charter member of Hollywood's Brat Pack. That iconic group of ingenues and heartthrobs has come to represent both a genre of film and an era of pop culture. In his memoir, McCarthy focuses his gaze on that singular moment in time. The result is a revealing look at coming of age in a maelstrom, reckoning with conflicted ambition, innocence, addiction, and masculinity.

Story
Nana Coupeau is a beautiful woman, able to attract men of enormous wealth with the crook of her finger. Part-time prostitute, part-time actress, she makes her debut in a mediocre operetta The Blonde Venus at the bustling Paris World’s Fair of 1867. She can’t sing, act, or dance, yet she is stunning. Nana soon rockets through elite Parisian society, and, blinded by desire, men crawl to her feet, yielding to her every demand. Affections are manipulated, hearts are broken; fortunes are gutted and inheritances squandered.

Story
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.
