Story
The secret behind France's astonishingly well-behaved children is here. When American journalist Pamela Druckerman has a baby in Paris, she doesn't aspire to become a "French parent". French parenting isn't a known thing, like French fashion or French cheese. Even French parents themselves insist they aren't doing anything special. But French children are far better behaved and more in command of themselves than American kids....

Great book! Irritating narration
Reviewed: 05-27-24
Fascinating book! Lots of really great information. It definitely helped me see my own biases and attitudes towards parenting that I took for granted as an American.
That being said, I really wish it was more common to have the author narrate their own audiobook. The French accent this narrator uses was cute at first but quickly became irritating & felt extremely pretentious.

Great content, lousy narrator!
Reviewed: 04-23-24
Please, please, please encourage authors to read their own books!! I know it’s often an editor’s decision so I’m hoping they read reviews.
I’m finding it hard to believe this narrator is even human! He sounds just like a robot.
The content of this book is wonderful & so fascinating! It would be so nice if it had a narrator to match!

I wish you could just give the books stars without writing anything though. I never know what to say

Hold On to Your Kids

Story
Dr. Neufeld and Dr. Maté explore the phenomenon of peer orientation: the troubling tendency of children and youth to look to their peers for direction—for a sense of right and wrong, for values, identity and codes of behavior. But peer orientation undermines family cohesion, poisons the school atmosphere, and fosters an aggressively hostile and sexualized youth culture. It provides a powerful explanation for schoolyard bullying and youth violence; it is an escalating trend that has never been adequately described or contested until Hold On to Your Kids.

Pathologizing
Reviewed: 01-21-24
I love Gabor Mate’s work ordinarily but this book must be mostly written by the other author. I really dislike the tone! It seems to pathologize normal childhood/adolescent behavior & efforts to individuate. I found it very negative & unhelpful.

Story
P.G. Wodehouse documented the lives of the inimitable Jeeves and Wooster for nearly sixty years, from their first appearance in 1915 ("Extricating Young Gussie") to his final completed novel (Aunts Aren't Gentlemen) in 1974. These two were the finest creations of a novelist widely proclaimed to be the finest comic English writer by critics and fans alike. Now, forty years later, Bertie and Jeeves return in a hilarious affair of mix-ups and mishaps.

I really enjoyed this book. What an incredible undertaking! The author should be very proud of his effort. It does read differently than the original Jeeves books but that’s completely understandable.
I didn’t find it as funny as the originals but I will say I was moved to tears a couple times, especially by the ending, which was a new experience.
I wish the author every success in achieving his goal of introducing the Jeeves books to a new generation of readers.
I’m so glad there are others out there who love them as much as I do!

Bob Mortimer’s life was trundling along happily until suddenly in 2015 he was diagnosed with a heart condition that required immediate surgery and forced him to cancel an upcoming tour. Rob Beckett never seems to fit in. At work, in the middle-class world of television and comedy, he’s the laddie, cockney geezer, but to his mates down the pub in south-east London, he’s the theatrical one, a media luvvie. Even at home, his wife and kids are posher than him. In this hilarious exploration of class, Rob compares his life growing up as a working-class kid to the life he lives now, trying to understand where he truly belongs.

As an American woman, you wouldn’t think we would have too much in common but it just goes to show when you write from the heart and are honest about your life experience, as Rob has done here, it can’t help but resonate with a wide variety of people. Thanks for making me laugh!

David Mitchell, who you may know for his inappropriate anger on every TV panel show except Never Mind the Buzzcocks, his look of permanent discomfort on C4 sex comedy Peep Show, his online commenter-baiting in The Observer or just for wearing a stick-on moustache in That Mitchell and Webb Look, has written a book about his life.

Story
If you're a man of a certain age you'll know there comes a point in life when getting a sports car and over-analysing your contribution to society sounds like a really good idea. With a good job in sales and marketing and a nice house in Manchester that he shared with his wife and kids, John Bishop was no different when he turned the dreaded 4-0. But instead of spanking a load of cash on a car that would have made him look like a senior stylist at Vidal Sassoon, he stumbled onto a pathway that ultimately lead him to become one of the nation's best loved comedians.
