He’s on his way to an arts festival in Santa Fe when he stops to get a room for himself and his twenty-year-old autistic brother, Shep. Dissapointing
Reviewed: 02-06-24
I have listened to other books by Dean Koontz and enjoyed them. An hour into this one, I was hoping it would get better. Five hours in, and I knew it had to be going somewhere, and then it ended. Nothing. There was not a single character in the book that I cared for. The only suspense was how is he going to redeem this book to make it worthwhile. It didn't. If you want to listen to two people argue with each other and throw in an autistic brother who adds nothing to the plot, then this might be for you. The narrators are excellent.

From the massively popular podcaster and New York Times best-selling author comes the story of the Marquis de Lafayette's lifelong quest to protect the principles of democracy, told through the lens of the three revolutions he participated in: the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Revolution of 1830.

Story
Mars is changing. Seemingly overnight the once "Red" planet is turning to gray. Something is happening, something unnatural. A team of, literally, rocket scientists figure out a way to send a probe, very fast, to Mars to determine how and why it is changing. However, when the probe is destroyed well short of the formerly red planet, it's apparent that Mars is being used as a staging ground. The only viable target for that staging ground is Earth.

Anticlimactic ending
Reviewed: 02-01-23
First, the narration was above average. He had a voice that was easy for me to hear. The story began well for the first few hours. Then it began to get lost in excoriating details, which would have been ok if it had gotten used later in the book.(what happened to Gecko man?) It sounded like they got tired of writing the book after 13 hours and rushed the ending leaving me wondering what just happened. Definitely no sequel needed.

A very disappointing story. There was a small bit of action early on and then the rest was just boring, repetitive musings about nothing in particular and dying to nothingness. I will not be following the rest of the series.

I generally avoid books written by women and this book confirms that stance. My wife and I listen to a lot of books together while we are driving and I always try to find ones that I think she may enjoy. With a dog, a forest ranger, and some action, I thought this would be a good choice. It was in the fact that we both enjoyed mocking the excessive emotionalism of all of the characters. Why on two occasions when she was in contact with her supervisor via radio did she not tell him that men were out to kill them? Why did the big ass bad guy just keep threatening them over and over but never took any decisive action? And the dog was more of an emotional support animal. But at least the good guys got to live happily ever after, but then that was predictable.

I try to find books that my wife and I can listen to in the car. She is not into the genres that I typically like. Both of us found this book to be quite boring. So much so that we just quit listening to it midway through. It would be a good book for elementary-age students perhaps.

This is the best book I have listened to in a long time. The kind that when you are driving and reach your destination you want to sit in your car and listen a little longer. The plotlines initially seemed to over-focus on one area but they eventually balanced themselves out well. One plot just disappeared and another one, while it played a significant role also got what appeared to be an afterthought. (I won't spoil it for anyone.) I consider those two issues to be very minor though as I throughly enjoyed the book. The author was not afraid to kill off some characters. It was exciting, unpredictable and a pleasure to listen to. I highly recommend. Marc Vietor is an excellent narrator for me. I have some hearing challenges with some narrators but never with anything Marc reads.

One mans epic saga, another mans wasted time.
Reviewed: 12-06-19
First off, the narration was excellent. I would definitely listen to Matt Godfrey again. My hearing is slightly impaired and some narrators I have difficulty understanding. Not Matt Godfrey. All 30 hours were quite clear and each character was distinct. The story itself was a waste of 30 hours and an audible credit. I highly suspected two hours in that I was going to end up dissapointed and I was. There was little redeeming virtue in any of the characters beyond the black household servants. Weak, self-centered, dependent personalities willing to destroy the lives of their children and grandchildren for their own personal comfort. Emotional incest to the nth. degree. The most mentally unhealthy characters I have met in a long time. The ones who died were the lucky ones. The only intensity of action came in the last 90 minutes. Far more questions than answers and the few answers were not very satisfying.
