About this listen

From a New York Times best-selling and Hugo award-winning author comes a modern masterwork of science fiction, introducing a captain, his crew, and a detective as they unravel a horrifying solar system wide conspiracy that begins with a single missing girl.

Humanity has colonized the solar system - Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond - but the stars are still out of our reach.

Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, the Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for - and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.

Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.

Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations - and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the Universe.

Not my genre

This was my first real introduction to sci-fi since high school and I was blown away. At the time of writing this I am on the third in series and will undoubtedly finish all of them. The writing is fantastic and the narrator does an ‘interstellar’ job of delivering what I believe to be a perfect cadence for the material. I am sure the experience of reading the book is different from that of listening and I have only done the latter. That being said, I have no regrets about allowing the narration to help form the images and sounds of the story in my head. A wonderful read and a welcome distraction from the doldrums of what is now month 6 of the Pandemic. Enjoy!

Truly outstanding space scifi

I read a lot of space based scifi, and this is one of my favorite series of all. I frequently bounce around from one series and genres to another as I finish books, but when I finished Leviathan Wakes, (book 1 of this series), I just kept going on to the next book and the next, etc, until I had read the all 8 full books that were out. (I don't count the .5 short books). I've already pre-ordered book 9. Great adventure and action, but at the same time, the character development is outstanding. You really get to know all of the principle characters, and you get invested in each of them. I also laughed out loud a lot, and previously, only Skippy has gotten me to do that when listening to books. Great series - enjoy!

The Expaaaaaanse

This was an awesome book. James Corey does something only few writers can do. He can spend two lines painting a scene that you can feel and hear, while at the same time write a long description of a place with only the exact details you need to be there completely. I loved this book and just got book two. Definitely check it out.

An excellent book in the audio format.

An excellent science fiction story that is different enough from the show to make it worth reading. If you enjoy the show, you will enjoy this.

A little long, but worth the pay off

Great book, but very long. I didn’t feel like it was dragging at any point like I have with other books of this size. It probably should have just been 2 books. If you go into it with that mindset it is really great. Ending is worth every minute.

Great beginning to a series

Narration was good . Story was good. Characters were good. Sometimes the story was a little hard to follow but I will be purchasing the next book to listen to soon.

Great Story, bad narrator

Voices all sound alike, and he has unnaturally long pauses between words. Story is great otherwise.

Slow start, but an excellent and gripping book!

At first, I didn't like the narrator, feeling that the reading was too dry. I'm not sure if he gets more animated as the book progresses or if I got used to his reading style, but either way I found myself totally engaged and really enjoying his performance by the end. I was happy to see that he performs the whole series and just started the second book.

As a book, Leviathan Wakes took a little bit to get going, but once it did, it really hit its pace! The characters quickly grew on me and I was very invested in their adventure. I loved the 'casual science' in the book, where things like spaceship acceleration is consistently described in terms of g-force, which put the act of crossing the incomprehensible distances of space into a context that I felt like I could really understand. All in all, it's a great book and I'm eager to continue the series.
