Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Heartwarming with humor
Reviewed: 05-31-25
I feared this book would be too sad, but finally tackled it and was happy that the author wove multiple story lines together in a positive, uplifting way, with great dashes of humor. I enjoyed learning the backgrounds of and looked forward to hearing updates about all the characters, but especially Tova, Cameron and Ethan. The descriptions of the aquarium and Sowell Bay were charming, and I wish the town existed so I could make a visit.
After a few exciting and emotional twists and turns, Van Pelt brought everything together at the end in a way that was not predictable and very satisfying. The book was beautifully narrated, especially Marcellus’ intelligent, irreverent voice. I won’t look at an octopus in the same way again! No pressure, but I hope Ms. Van Pelt produces another book soon.

This book was a pleasant shock - it is a well-written and fascinating book based on a true story about the early exploration of what is now Canada. The author did an excellent job of describing what the heroine, Marguerite might have thought, felt and experienced. A few times in the book, when all seemed lost, the author had Marguerite take surprisingly creative approaches that saved her. The details of clothing, food and furnishings of the period were well-researched and visually described. I look forward to reading other books by Allegra Goodman - no pressure but I hope they are all as good as Isola!

Terrified, Sally slams on the brakes. After a flash of bright light nearly blinds her, she passes out, awakening to the persistent knock of a police officer on her car window. When she sees the officer and remembers her frightening experience, she screams and faints, and is rushed to the hospital.

This book is so appropriate for the times - a thoughtful, sensitive approach to a hostage-taking situation with a creative twist. I dreaded, yet couldn’t wait to hear how Patchett would handle the inevitable end, and although sad, it was realistically well-done. The situations and characters in this book will stay with me for a long time.

Story
To Christina Olson, the entire world was her family's remote farm in the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. Born in the home her family had lived in for generations, and increasingly incapacitated by illness, Christina seemed destined for a small life. Instead, for more than 20 years, she was host to and inspiration for the artist Andrew Wyeth and became the subject of one of the best known American paintings of the 20th century.

The author and narrator put listeners gently into Christina’s shoes. The rich descriptions and insights into her life as well as “Andy” Wyeth’s career give the reader a deeper background into how he created his paintings. I won’t look at his art again without thinking of this book. Wonderful.

This story draws on books like Water For Elephants in the worst way. It is written in a juvenile tone, to the extent I thought it was a YA, that is, until I got to the unnecessary violence and cruelty to a young girl and animals. Despite other reviews affirming the book never got better, I stuck with it to the end, which was sad and trite. I don’t trust this author enough to read another book by her.

As with all of Anne Hillerman’s books, this was a great story with a strong female lead. The descriptions of the landscapes were great, as was the inclusion of Navajo history and culture. The narration was good, with just a few mispronunciations only locals would notice.
