Story
It's not just a thousand miles that separates Hanna Majewski from her younger sister, Stefa. There is another gulf—between the traditional Jewish ways that Hanna chose to leave behind in Warsaw, and her new, independent life in London. But as autumn of 1940 draws near, Germany begins a savage aerial bombing campaign in England, killing and displacing tens of thousands. Hanna, who narrowly escapes death, is recruited as a spy in an undercover operation that sends her back to her war-torn homeland.

New perspective from inside the ghetto!
Reviewed: 08-10-24
Wow! This book was so good. I have read lots of world war 2 books and this one was amazing. I appreciated the perspective of someone that might have lived inside the Jewish Ghetto. There were so many parallels to what is happening in today’s world with government propaganda and hidden agendas. For the first time I could understand how some people had to ignore what was happening in order to survive. Previously I just couldn’t comprehend. It’s still not ok but at least I have compassion now for people who just couldn’t admit what was happening. The varying perspectives of the different characters left me pondering the depth of depravity and sorrow that people experienced at that time. Definitely worth a read for anyone with a World War Two interest.

Complicated mystery with lots of twists
Reviewed: 07-31-24
I love how Jana puts together these complicated mysteries. After 27 books and counting, I can usually pick out the murderer. But how it gets there is the fun part full of surprises I didn’t see coming. I have recommended this book series to everyone I know! I love how the base characters are expanding with every book, and continue to show up as more books are published. I can imagine so many fun twists and turns yet to come. Can’t wish for book 28 to be published!

I absolutely loved this book. I want to seek out the lost friends database and learn more about that part of history. Lisa did a fantastic job taking me back to the past and I could imagine every page in my mind. This heart renching story needs to be read in every classroom across the US. We need to study the past or we are doomed to repeat it. We need to read the ugly parts, the ones that make us cringe. I’m so grateful for this book and the facts she included in her story. I wish there were a whole slew of these stories to read from Lisa!

Grilling emotional story told perfectly!

I was annoyed as I read the first few chapters, that she didn’t have more confidence in herself. But as the story progressed, I couldn’t wait to hear what would happen next. The struggle from what is to what can be is a thread that many people can relate to. It’s a beautiful story of self reflection and self discovery that I can relate to. I wish I could hear what happened next in the story. Book two of this story would be amazing!

Best book read this year!
Reviewed: 07-13-24
This book transported me to a time in history I had no knowledge of. I felt what the characters felt and loved every minute of it. Although in the beginning I was confused about the main character and her feelings about home. As her depth of character developed I found myself gripping each page of the story, not wanting to wait to see what happened next. This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. And that’s a long list. I absolutely will visit the Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia and can’t wait to plan my visit. I want to experience the slow way of life there and imagine the wonder and history of those mountains and the people that once lived there like in the story.

Great story telling and back story
Reviewed: 01-10-24
The author started off slow, and I didn’t understand at first where the story was going. But I stuck with it and was so glad I did. This was an interesting retelling of a difficult time in our country’s history. I loved to see her character so torn between what was right and proper and what was evil. Really great story. I wish there was a sequel.

I didn’t love that the story was so focused on the intricacies of the boys relationship. I did love the overall story about accepting our past instead of avoiding or erasing it. The acceptance of friendship and of people as they are was well written. Definitely seems like a political view was being expressed in this story. Could have done without that.

Zeus has punished his son Apollo - god of the sun, music, archery, poetry, and more - by casting him down to earth in the form of a gawky, acne-covered 16-year-old mortal named Lester. The only way Apollo can reclaim his rightful place on Mount Olympus is by restoring several Oracles that have gone dark. What is affecting the Oracles, and how can Apollo/Lester do anything about them without his powers?
