The book stands out as well written, attention grabbing, with strong characterization, I laughed out loud a couple of times and squirmed at the scenes of cruelty. It’s perfect for fans of police procedurals.

I’m hooked on the “in Death” Series

Each book in this series sparkles, no matter how many you’ve read. Nora Roberts’ “in Death” books are proven winners.

Susan Ericksen’s performance is outstanding. She uses a variety of clearly defined voices and reads in a way that illuminates the story. Bravo, Ms Ericksen!

I’m hooked on this series. When I finish one I download the next one. I think it’s because the characters are so appealing and the storylines aren’t repetitive. Each book has the characters you love, and the familiar plot structure, yet stands on its own.

The characters are larger than life, but aren’t caricatures. They have a backstory and their complex personalities and relationships develop during the series.

As I describe Eve and Roark below, it sounds like I’m poking fun at them. But here’s the thing, all their characteristics make the stories interesting.

New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas dedicates her life to finding justice for victims. She relentlessly hunts down the villains, often at the expense of her own physical and mental health. She has a hair trigger temper and shouts a lot, but she has a good heart and those close to her love and admire her. (BTW, she catches the criminal every time. This should not be a spoiler.)

Her husband, Roark, the wealthiest man in the known universe, is also brilliant, drop-dead handsome, incredibly sexy, charming, and dangerous.

Eve and Roark are madly in love, and both having strong (titanium-reinforced) wills, they quarrel. The arguments often end with a roll in the hay, or in the elevator, or in the shower…... You can count on a few steamy scenes in every book. Their sex life seems too good to be true. No one could make love so often, or have so many organisms at a time. Could they? And what is all the biting about? Well, maybe I’m just jealous.

And there’s more! The goofy sidekicks, the humor, the poignancy…..

I hope you give the series a try if you haven’t already and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

This book was a pleasure to read like all the books in this series. In fact, the books are getting better and better. I love the predicaments Ellison get into. I also enjoy the wacky characters. Setting the series in an exclusive country club during the 1970s is just perfect.
The books are fanciful, so expect the plot to stretch believably and to be similar in each book. Somehow that doesn’t detract from how much I enjoy them.
I highly recommend this book.

The characters are interesting and the story is fresh. I’d recommend it to someone who appreciates excellent narration, good writing, a bit of crime, a little mystery, and some romance.

A good read if you’re interested in explicit and non-kinky sex between consenting adults. The plot is suspenseful, but too far-fetched. I’ve been wondering if this is a new genre.

It’s trite, predictable, and the heroine is too, too perfect. She’s so amazing she’s able to save herself while dying with the inspiration of a hallucination using a move that would make a contortionist envious, and using a symbolic object. I listened for free, but honestly, it was a waste of time.
BTW, the narrator was okay and her Southern accent didn’t bother me like it did other listeners.

I highly recommend this to everyone.

The plot is different from the usual mystery. It’s suspenseful and surprising. The characters are believable.

I love a good mystery novel like this one. It’s got a fresh plot and interesting and believable characters. The narrator is terrific. She gives each character their own voice.

Some of the mysteries I’ve read are forgettable - predictable, with standard characters. I can’t remember their titles or what they ate about. But, this book is different. I’ll think about the plot of The Cuckoo’s Cry for a long time and I won’t forget its name.

So-So Book and Narrator

Sadly, the book isn’t very good. It’s l not suspenseful or particularly believable.

The characters banter and make bad jokes and wise cracks, even in situations when they should be fear stricken, or devastated by a tragedy.

During an interrogation a law enforcement officer threatens to put the suspect in a dangerous situation unless he talks. That’s coercing testimony and forcing the suspect to self-incriminate - big no-nos. His lawyer would have gone straight to a judge for an emergency order. But the suspect talks and his lawyer does nothing.

The narrator always sounds like a man, even when speaking a woman’s or a child’s part. He doesn’t do Spanish or Middle Eastern accents well. He mispronounced some words including Louisville (he pronounced the s) and El Paso (sounded like El Posso.)

I wish I could recommend the book, but I can’t. I downloaded the package of 3 books. I’m not going to listen to the third one.

I almost always rate the narrators 5 stars. They make or break an audiobook. When you read a book you bring it alive in your own mind. When you listen to a book the narrator influences how you experience it. I’m impressed with the performances most of them give. They have so many voices and accents. They can make the characters believable and distinguishable from one another. I’m sorry to say that this narrator had a hard time sounding like a child or a woman. It detracted from the overall book.

The first book in the series, The Wild Inside, is the best by far. The Author was able to write a book that was believable as well as interesting, suspenseful, and a bit spooky.

The second book, Mortal Fall, is disappointing. It’s not interesting or suspenseful.

The Weight of Night, the third in the series, is ok. It’s better than the second one and not nearly as good as the first. The plot didn’t grab me. First, it is overused and predictable. However, this is the first book I’ve read where a character has a serious sleep disorder. Second, I’ve heard that a good story should show and not tell. In Weight of Night, two characters narrate the story, so you only get first hand accounts of what happens when they are present. Anything else is told to the reader second hand. It takes a lot of the life out of the story.

I recommend this book as a light summer listen for mystery lovers. Just don’t expect it to be as suspenseful as the first book.
