About this listen

In a land sculpted by glaciers, the forest is on fire. Thick smoke chokes the mountain air and casts a twilight glow over the imposing mountains and vistas of Montana's Glacier National Park. When firefighters are called in to dig fuel line breaks near the small town bordering the park, a crew member is shocked to unearth a shallow grave containing human remains.

Park police officer Monty Harris is summoned to the site to conduct an excavation. But with a 2,500-degree incendiary monster threatening to barrel through the town and no forensic detective on hand, Monty must work outside protocol. So he seeks help from Gretchen Larson, the county's lead crime scene investigator and someone on whom Monty feels he can rely.

The two are working against the clock to determine the true identity of the victim when a teenager suddenly disappears from one of the campgrounds in Glacier. Could the cases somehow be connected? As chances for recovery of the missing boy grow slimmer and the FBI finds only dead ends, Gretchen and Monty desperately race to fit all the pieces together in time.

The Weight of Night is Christine Carbo's latest book in a series that "paints a moving picture of complex, flawed people fighting to make their way in a wilderness where little is black or white" (Publishers Weekly). This gripping thriller is a tribute to the power of family, set against one of America's most majestic and unforgiving landscapes.

RC Bray and the wilds of Montana? Yes, Please!

This is the third book in the series and delivers just as much as the first two, if not more!!

I actually started listening to this series because I love RC Bray. The fact that the series is well-written with an incredible mystery is just bonus. A tip of the hat to the author!

This listen had a lot of elements that came together quite nicely. The duo POV was a good call but seriously, I think Bray could have handled both. I loved this series and with only one book left, I'm thrilled to continue but also kinda sad that it's almost over.

Superb author

Another great book by Christine Carbo. Very interesting story that really catches you. I hope she continues to write books as I have now read all four of hers.

Edge of Your Seat Suspense , in wide open Montana!

Once again, Christine Carbo has written a brilliant thriller, set in Glacier National Park. In Weight of the Night , book 3, of this series, all the wonderful characters from previous 2 novels return. However, the main character for this book is Gretchen, the forensic scientist for the county that assists the park rangers in solving crime within the park. Christine develops Gretchen into a more complex human being, exposing more of the dark past that makes Gretchen the woman she is. But what makes Weight of the Night a masterpiece of creativity, is how Christine, weaves the mystery of a missing boy, the discovery of a skeleton in a shallow grave and the fierce power of spreading forest fires, with the story of Gretchen's self-discovery. It is a powerful story that keeps you entertained from beginning to end. I love this series! And I love these characters!

Hoping for a 4th in this series!

So good! Once again Christine Carbo takes us to Glacier National Park ~ this time during a wildfire that's disrupted the grave a young boy. In this, the 3rd in the Glacier series, she brings back good, old Monty with all of his adorable uptightness and expands on Gretchen, the crime scene investigator from both book 1 and 2. Once again weaving the personal history and traumas of the two main characters into the present murder mystery, Carbo develops characters you can quickly empathize with. The story becomes suspenseful and kicks into second gear pretty quick when a second boy goes missing (first chapter - not a spoiler.) I really fell in love with Monty and Gretchen which surprised me because I was so bummed that Ted Sistead from book 1 had not returned to the series. Carbo effortlessly draws the lines between Monty and Gretchen's haunted pasts to the present mystery and spins such a successful story in this one, the third in the Glacier series. I still feel like the first book was my fave, but this was REALLY good. She also is so good at educating you on the national park history and it's relevance to the tale that you learn a lot without even realizing it. The wildfire acts almost as another character in the book and was absolutely fascinating. I am sincerely hoping - no praying - that Carbo writes a 4th. You can read this book independently of the other 2 but I highly recommend reading all 3!

Another good read by Carbo

Good story with twists and turns. Setting is Glacier Park and surrounding communities of interesting and quirky Montanans.. Being from MT she got it right on. This is the 3rd book in the series and I have enjoyed them and anticipate #4.

Best so far

I have been listening to the books in this series. This one had the best story development with less focus on the angst of the male lead.
The female narrator was especially good and I hope future books will use her in lieu of the monotone male narrator used for this and past books. Her inflection and ability to change her voice to portray the two chapters enhanced the story

Another solid story

This was another page turner! Though I thought that I fell into a few holes in the plot I have forgotten them already. I must say I wanted Christine and Monty to do a Hollywood ending but....;-)

Entertaining plot with fine character development and excellent portrayal of the special location (which we’ve personally experienced).

Love the authors descriptive telling of scenery so much I want to visit GNP! Who doesn’t love RC Bray and the other performer Sarah was a nice addition!
