I was a die hard Buffy fan when it was airing. It's been a lot of fun to rewatch the series, then listen to Ash and Alaina watch, too. I really hope this podcast goes beyond just season 1 of the show!

I'm so confused

I'm about an hour into the book, and I'm so confused. Who are these people and what are they doing and why do I care? There's no back story given, just random vignettes of people doing things. I shouldn't have to work so hard to understand what's going on here.
The narrator is great, though. She's not got a lot to work with, but she's doing her best.

The story sucked me right in! The narrator was perfect. The story moved along fast enough to keep my attention. I couldn't predict what was going to happen next. Def recommend.

Least favorite book of the series

I really enjoy these books for the fun and funny antics that the wizards get up to. They are a pack of clever, loveable dorks. My least favorite part of the story is the whole "Brit the Younger/Elder", "Do I have free will?", "I did this stupid thing because it already happened that way" nonsense. It drags the story down while thinking it's witty. This book has more than most of the other books. I'll enjoy revisiting the other books in the series, except for the Atlantis book, for the same reason as this book.
The whole "Philip cheated" plot upsets me, too. The other characters don't seem to care much that Philip's heart and future are sacrificed .... just because? Couldn't they think of another way to solve the problem without throwing this sweet man under the bus in such a heartless way?

My husband and I listened to all 4 books (just under 100 hours) in about 3 weeks. That's how good this story is! He and I don't often like the same books, but we were both all in on this series. Can't wait for book 5!

I've read all 4 books and this might be my least favorite of the 4. But I still give it solid 5 stars across the board. I like that this isn't just a slightly redressed version of book 1. We meet new characters and go on new adventures. A solid and fun listen. The narrator is outstanding.

I've read the first four books, and loved them. This one might be my favorite because it's heavy on the fighting. I also love Jason's evolution in this book.

The narrator can make or break an audio book, and this narrator is perfect. He voices a wide range of characters in a very believable way. He makes the funny parts funnier and the serious parts moving.

Loved it as much as the previous books

This is such a fun series. Some people complain about Jason being unlikable, but I like that he's not perfect and I like that he's a work in progress. He makes mistakes and learns from them. He's not a boring clone of your typical adventure hero.. He can be a jerk. He can be insensitive. But he's funny, he's smart, he's brave, he cares about people and he doesn't take things super seriously.

This book is fun because it's set on Earth and we get to meet Jason's family. The author is really good at creating distinct, interesting characters, like Emmy and Erica and Hiro. I loved learning about magic on Earth. It's all a set up for book 5, I hope!

I can tell this book was written in serial fashion. It's not edited in the way that a traditional series is edited. There's lots of fluff that could be taken out to make the story tighter. But for me that doesn't distract from the enjoyment of the story. I love this world, I love the characters and I love the concept of the series.

The political bits made me roll my eyes. I want an escapist read! But, the few minutes of political nonsense certainly didn't ruin the hours and hours of enjoyable story for me.

My favorite parts of the series are the fights, and this book is light in fight scenes. But finally getting to meet Jason's Earth family made up for that.

I forgot how fun Harvath stories are

It's been years since I've picked up a Scot Harvath book. I completely forgot how fun they can be! Sometimes these military adventure stories can be so dense with people, names, locations and procedural details, that I get lost. Brad Thor has a way of keeping the story rich in detail, but also emotionally accessible and entertaining. I really enjoyed this book, including the excellent narration. George Guidall is my favorite, but Armand Schultz made me forget that he's NOT George Guidall.
