Story
Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science - as well as religious and cultural institutions - has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing....

I like that they pointed out what they believed and were presenting as well as what others believed and presented... but did a good job supporting their thinking. Some obvious non- obvious observations and conclusions.

Story
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Story
Superintelligence asks the questions: What happens when machines surpass humans in general intelligence? Will artificial agents save or destroy us? Nick Bostrom lays the foundation for understanding the future of humanity and intelligent life. The human brain has some capabilities that the brains of other animals lack. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. If machine brains surpassed human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become extremely powerful - possibly beyond our control.

Macro vs Micro
Reviewed: 02-25-21
A very macro oriented look at some of the relationship dynamics between men and women as well as Alpha and Beta. A few studies cited but I was pretty sure the stats and quotes used were cherry picked and not an indication of overall thinking. I found it overly formal/technical in its language as well. My opinion is if you decide to read/listen to this you can 100%skip the 1st chapter after listening to the 1st few sentences...its super repetitive on why he writing this book...ok great, now get to it...also if you are not familiar with a lot of the terminology there is a glossary at the end you may want to listen to 1st...thats how techno speak it gets.

James A. Michener's masterly chronicle of South Africa is an epic tale of adventurers, scoundrels, and ministers, the best and worst of two continents, who carve an empire out of a vast wilderness. From the Java-born Van Doorn family tree springs two great branches: one nurtures lush vineyards, the other settles the interior to become the first Trekboers and Afrikaners.

Great to learn some History via a good story
Reviewed: 01-09-21
I didn't know Anything about South African History prior to listening to this. I'm sure there are people who would disagree with the authors characters and what they did or did not do, but I would like to think there were people just like that all over SA.
Towards the end I started getting a little dejavu in a more abstract sense to the current state of US politics (the increased temperature of things around an election period) ...which is funny because at the time this was written the author refers to Jimmy Carter a few times...not exactly current.
