Story
George Horace Lorimer (1867-1937) was an American journalist, author, and publisher. He is best known as the editor of The Saturday Evening Post, which he led from 1899 to 1936. This work contains the correspondence between the fictional self-made Chicago millionaire "Gorgon" Graham and his son Pierrepont who is coming of age and about to enter the family business. The letters are witty and filled with sound advice, like “I remember reading once that some fellows use language to conceal thought; but it's been my experience that a good many more use it instead of thought.”

Think twice about this one.
Reviewed: 12-23-24
I have read this audiobook on Audible 7 times over a 10 year period. It was an outstanding read each time THANKS TO A VERY TALENTED NARRATOR and I never tired of it. HOWEVER, those days are in the past, Audible has apparently seen fit to find a different narrator (possibly an AI bot) who appears to be incapable of pronouncing the name of the son (Pierrepont), which appears on every page.
The book is outstanding if you can tolerate the current poor performance.

Jenn Corbin appeared to have it all: two dear little boys, a posh home in one of the upscale suburbs of Atlanta, expensive cars, a plush houseboat, and a husband, Dr. Bart Corbin, a successful dentist, who was tall, handsome, and brilliant. But gradually their seemingly idyllic life together began to crumble. Bart was distraught and Jenn seemed disenchanted. Then, just a few weeks before Christmas 2004, Jenn was found dead with a bullet in her head, an apparent suicide.

Story
George Horace Lorimer is best known as the editor of The Saturday Evening Post, where he was credited with promoting and discovering authors like Jack London. Lorimer compiled his life advice into the fictional letters from John "Old Gorgon" Graham to his son Pierrepont. John Graham is a Chicago-based pork and finance baron. In the letters Pierrepont receives advice for his different stages of life. Old Gorgon's advice is packed throughout the book, easy to understand, and still rings true today.

Long before I subscribed to Audible, I read this physical book. Not only that, I read it several times. It is absolutely outstanding and quite humorous. Unfortunately, the reader here has no grasp whatsoever of the humor in the father's admonitions to the son. Thus, the performance leaves one with a rather drab and uninteresting read. I would return it if I could, but I allowed the return time frame to run too long past the date I could have returned it. I, most emphatically, would not recommend this performance of an otherwise most interesting book.

Story
Thus begins one of the most famous poems in American history: Ernest L. Thayer’s "Casey at the Bat". When the powerful Mudville baseball team enters the ninth inning of their game behind by two runs, things seem pretty grim. And when the first two batters make outs, it looks like their best player, the mighty Casey, won’t even get a chance to win the game for them. Then, two unlikely players get hits, and suddenly the crowd is cheering as Casey strolls to the plate. Casey’s epic at-bat has delighted generations of listeners, young and old.

Story
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Horrible narration!!!!
Reviewed: 08-12-22
It's a well told story about one of our greatest men and one of our greatest presidents. The narrator leaves MUCH to be desired. The longer I listened to her granny voice the more frustrated I became. Eventually I just had to stop. The narrator's voice reminds me of a little old lady in her rocking chair. Enough!!!!

Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor", a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

So you want to narrate. Great,. Let me be the first to congratulate you. It's about time. If you've been thinking about this for a long time, I don't know what took you so long. This is not as hard as people say. This is not a get-rich-quick scheme, and it does require some work on your part. I want to show you how you can begin to be a great narrator, make a lot of sales, supplement your income, and live a life with residual income forever.

We have a narrator, Mr Thornton, who is advocating narration as an income source and explaining how to go about doing it. So WHY, Since it is such a short story would Mr Thornton hire the worst narrator on the face of the earth to narrate HIS short book?

LOW THRESHOLD FOR SHORT STORIES
Reviewed: 09-07-20
When I read a book of short stories I expect to dislike most of them. I, in fact, read the first page of each one and if it does not grab me I am done with it. Not the book, just that particular story. I am more than satisfied if there is just one story that I really like. NO COMEBACKS, which is the title of the first story, is one of the very best I have ever read. In fact, I read it years ago in paperback and saved the paperback because I liked NO COMEBACKS so well. The narrator is superb, The story is masterfully done and I have listened to it twice this time even though I know every turn in the story. GREAT READ.....AGAIN!!!

Grisham is just one of the greatest writers on the planet. I love his books. Frank Muller was one of the best narrators on the planet until his death. However, someone should have given him the correct pronunciation of Biloxi, since the word is one of the most used words in the book. It is pronounced "Biluxi", not Biloxi.
