About this listen

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Once he was a well-liked, well-paid young partner in a thriving Mississippi law firm. Then he stole ninety million dollars from his own firm—and ran for his life.

“One terrific book—smart, fast, stingingly satiric, and almost criminally entertaining.”—Entertainment Weekly

For four years Patrick Lanigan evaded men who were rich and powerful, and who would stop at nothing to find him. Then, inevitably, on the edge of the Brazilian jungle, they finally tracked him down.

Now Patrick is coming home. And in the Mississippi city where it all began, an extraordinary trial is about to begin. As prosecutors circle like sharks, as Patrick’s lawyer prepares his defense, as Patrick’s lover prays for his deliverance and his former partners wait for their revenge, another story is about to emerge. Because Patrick Lanigan, the most reviled white-collar criminal of his time, knows something that no one else in the world knows. He knows the truth.

Featured Article: The Essential John Grisham in Audio

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

Frank Muller is the narrator, not Michael Beck

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a great story, but please give Frank Muller his due. His career ended tragically and his surviving narrations are noteworthy. He is, by far, the best suspenseful narrator I have ever heard. Ask Stephen King.

Loved it. Classic Grisham.

Any additional comments?

Good pace. Loved how the story unfolded. Thought the end was a little telegraphed, but really worked.

Excellent story, unfortunately the ending was awful.

I really loved this book for the most part. It sucks you in from the beginning and keeps you intrigued. The story flows quite nicely with the telling of Danilo/Patrick's story. At first I just kept wanting to know how the money came about and wether or not it was in fact dirty money. About half way through my questions were answered. Patrick was such a genius planning everything, however I never understood why he entrusted Eva with all of the money. I could understand the majority of it, however some of it he should have had in his name. Early on I suspected a double cross, however as the story progressed I became less and less certain and thought I was wrong. I liked Patrick and and that's why the ending made me so mad. I felt sorry for the poor man. His wife was nothing but a money hungry whore with a bad attitude, and her boy toy Lance was an idiot thug. She didn't deserve her good fortune that's for sure. The child, yes, but her no. Patrick's fellow partners in the firm were snotty crooks who believed they ruled the world. I would have ran away also. Patrick was a good guy who deserved better in my opinion. The narrator was excellent and did a fabulous job. I enjoyed listening to him. Though several times throughout the book I noticed that he repeated some lines. You get used to it but it's a tad aggravating. I definitely recommend this book. It's definitely a story you want to continuously listen to find out more of the Patrick story. Totally worth a credit and would have been five stars but the ending upset me.

5 stars until the ending

I loved this story - probably one of my favorite Graham books - until the ending. that didn't tie into the rest of the story.

Had me from the start

Another great book from Grisham. They are not all this good but this one I strongly recommend. The ending may have been an after thought and could have been done a little different but I can't say it could have ended any better. Two thumbs up on this one.

Good story

Good story but unfortunately the ending was too predictable. I was hoping I was wrong about the ending but I guessed it almost from the beginning.

Engaging story...

But if you are going to read regional stories you should learn to pronounce the names like the locals.
