Best Longmire yet!
Reviewed: 12-26-23
I’ve read every Longmire and this is the best yet. Kept my interest throughout. No mysticism in this one (yay). Unexpected twists and turns as an added bonus.

Story
Walt thinks he might find the answers he's looking for among the ruins of an old Native American boarding school—an institution designed to strip Native children of their heritage. He has been haunted by the image of the Fort Pratt Industrial Indian Training School ever since he first saw a faded postcard picturing a hundred boys in uniform, in front of a large, ominous building—a postcard that was given to him by Jimmy Lane, the father of Jeanie One Moon.

Truly disappointing
Reviewed: 12-19-22
I’m a huge Craig Johnson fan, always preordering his signed books even. But this one was a disappointment on every level. I struggled through it because I admire the author, but the book never got better.
So very many times the various characters would say words to the effect of, “I don’t understand what’s happening.” I felt the same way all the way through.
I don’t care for books or art that needs to be explained to me. I couldn’t keep track of the various characters, the wildly changing time periods, where it was, when it was…and worse yet, I found myself not caring, just slogging through.
Sorry Mr. Johnson, please come back to writing about reality and leave the hundred of pages of mysticism to other authors. Bring back the Longmire books that I love and expect.

Story
In a remote corner of the Chickasaw Nation, tribal Lighthorse policeman Bill Maytubby and county deputy Hannah Bond discover the buzzard-ravaged body of Majesty Tate, a young drifter with a blank past. They comb Oklahoma's rock prairie, river bottoms, and hard-bitten small towns for traces of her last days. Tate was seen dancing with Austin Love, a violent local meth dealer fresh out of prison. An Oklahoma City motel clerk connects her with an aspiring politician. An oil-patch roustabout and a shady itinerant preacher provide dubious leads.

Tried to like it but couldn’t
Reviewed: 07-17-21
I tried to like this book but got tired of being mired down in useless details. Kept finding myself wondering what the characters were even talking about. Gave up at chapter four and cut my losses. I usually stick with books I’ve purchased to the very end but could not fight my way even to the middle.

I wanted to like it

I like just about everything that this author writes. Not the case this time. The saccharine sweet voice of the main character grated on my nerves. Followed by too many characters to remember because I found I just didn’t care about them. Sorry, I really wanted to like this book.
