Story
Maude Julien's parents were fanatics who believed it was their sacred duty to turn her into the ultimate survivor - raising her in isolation and subjecting her to endless drills designed to "eliminate weakness." She endured a life without heat, hot water, adequate food, friendship, or any kind of affectionate treatment. But Maude's parents could not rule her inner life. Befriending the animals on the lonely estate as well as the characters in the novels she read in secret, young Maude nurtured in herself the compassion and love that her parents forbid as weak.

Great story of overcoming childhood trauma
Reviewed: 11-23-22
Wished she had went more into her life after becoming free. Her childhood story is one of hope and pray isn’t common. But if there are theories behind these behaviors, my hope diminishes to the realty of what some kids are or have gone through.

LOVED this!
Reviewed: 12-05-18
This was such a great book especially heard from her voice. There is no other opportunity to have Michelle’s voice speaking directly to you for close to 20 hours. And I loved every minute of it. The best parts were her descriptions of things and situations I wouldn’t have ever imagined, such things that only someone in her shoes or close to her would have witness to. If I can change anything it would be that this was part 1 of his part 2. Now that would be grand!

I'm glad I chose audio for this book. I believe I knew it was her voice before I realized it later by listening to her Ted Talk video. That made this book more special and classic!

Noah went missing two years ago, and his body has never been found. Almost everyone, including Ava’s semi-estranged husband, Wyatt, assumes the boy drowned after falling off the dock near their Church Island home.
