Dear Luke,

First let me say - I love you...I didn’t want to leave you...

Luke Richardson has returned home after burying Natalie, his beloved wife of 16 years, ready to face the hard job of raising their three children alone. But there’s something he’s not prepared for - a blue envelope with his name scrawled across the front in Natalie’s handwriting, waiting for him on the floor of their suburban Michigan home.

The letter inside, written on the first day of Natalie’s cancer treatment a year ago, turns out to be the first of many. Luke is convinced they’re genuine, but who is delivering them? As his obsession with the letters grows, Luke uncovers long-buried secrets that make him question everything he knew about his wife and their family. But the revelations also point the way toward a future where love goes on - in written words, in memories, and in the promises it’s never too late to keep.

Critic reviews

“Readers will feel like they have a first-class ticket to a scavenger hunt as they ride along with the main character to solve one mystery after another...The characters are multidimensional, and their beauty lies in their flaws and accountability.” (RT Book Reviews)

This was a good story, told well by the narrator, with just enough turns and twists to keep the reader interested, while staying cohesive and together. Well done.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, there are better books that are more intriguing in this genre. This one came across a little amateur, in my opinion.

What didn’t you like about Dan John Miller’s performance?

I didn't think that he switched between characters very fluidly and he did not come across as a seasoned narrator. Some narrators just pull you into the story while others (such as John Miller) keep you at a distance questioning the story. Not a great fit for this book.

Could you see When I'm Gone being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I can't see anyone picking this up as a movie or tv series. There are too many stories out there just like this one already. Not very original.

Secrets, deception, adoption. So many factors!

I found that I wanted to stop listening to the story several times. Luke was so emotionally basic that it was difficult to bear. I do appreciate that the reader attempted all of the characters. The letters became boring and muddled which took away from the details of the main story. Good read in a pinch

Loved this!.... my sister just passed away a month ago from stage 4 lung cancer, I could relate to parts of this story,... we are all still healing.

Great Story

The narrator took a little while for me to get used to, mostly because of his girl voices, but once I has listened for an hour or so, it no longer bothered me.
The book was beautiful with so many twists and turns.
I really loved it.

So many emotions

Great book, I usually like to read a book vs listening to it narrated but with this book the narration was so good I didn't want to read it.

Narration better than reading for once.
