Story
After everything that the citizens of Beartown have gone through, they are struck yet another blow when they learn that their beloved local hockey team will soon be disbanded. What makes it worse is the obvious satisfaction that all the former Beartown players, who now play for a rival team in Hed, take in that fact. Amidst the mounting tension between the two rivals, a surprising newcomer is handpicked to be Beartown's new hockey coach. Soon a new team starts to take shape around Amat, the fastest player you'll ever see; Benji, the crazed lone wolf; and Vidar, a born-to-be-bad troublemaker.

very long, lots of characters

Nice thesis. Too many characters. Less characters better developed would have made the story richer and less confusing.

Story
For more than two hundred years, disturbances of the mind—the sorts of things that were once called "madness"—have been studied and treated by the medical profession. Mental illness, some insist, is a disease like any other, whose origins can be identified and from which one can be cured. But is this true? In this masterful account of America's quest to understand and treat everything from anxiety to psychosis, one of the most provocative thinkers writing about psychiatry today sheds light on its tumultuous past.

Broad view without bias. Excellent narration. Accessible to the lay person. A must listen for anyone touched by mental illness which is basically everyone. If anyone in the street ever asked you for a handout...tag.

Story
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Hoped to learn something other than names and dates and vague descriptions of the historical personages of the Medici. This is a sappy love story that is contrived and predictable. The narrator's voice matches the story. Soft sex scenes are well written. I listened to the end like one listens to gossip. If you're not looking for any more it might appeal.

I had such high hopes for this book. It is a relentless spewing of self pity and wallowing in victimhood. What happened to him and his family and his people and his culture and his country was dispicable, but his endless whining did nothing to explore the issues and did a diservice to the injustice perpetrated.

Here and there I get the wiff of a giant ego (didn't anyone tell him he should have hired a professional to read it) struggling with the downfall of white male supremacy. While I disagree with many of his assumptions, his arguments are thoughtful and well articulated.
