The story grabbed my heart from the very beginning but it also fed my mind. I learned history and Hawaiian culture. I wish I’d read the author’s note first to understand how much research had been done and which parts of the story were factual or based on real people. I have a new understanding and a new level of compassion for people who have been treated so cruelly because of fear and ignorance.

So much I didn’t know about leprosy and Carville

I grew up in Louisiana and I remember hearing about the leper colony in our state. All I knew about leprosy I’d learned in Sunday school and it was 2,000 years out of date. This book, which I assume is historically accurate, filled in all the gaps in my understanding. The only negative is the mispronunciation of certain words. lol. Only someone from Louisiana would know the correct way to say the words. The accents were decent though. Kudos for that.

It’s stupid. The story is stupid. The guy talking says stupid stuff. I can’t even make myself finish it. I can’t get a refund because I bought the book instead of using a credit.

Just so so. I finished it. I wish she’d dug deeper into her relationship with her mother but the book is just a collection of stories about her life. Not much depth.

Great story and great character development. I was sad for the book to end. I might read it again. I can’t remember ever doing that but I might with this one

What a Kubica she has for concocting the most unexpected, suspenseful, twisting tales with the most believable and well developed characters. I can’t get enough. Next book, please!

The narration bugged me at first but I got used to it and focused on the story. I won’t say much and ruin it for anyone but it wasn’t what I expected. At one point I thought it was sooo predictable but I was sooo wrong.

I almost didn’t get this book because of the petty negative reviews. I’m glad I ignored them. Three stories, novellas I suppose, each with twists and turns as you would expect from Grisham and yet surprising. My favorite was the middle one. When it ended, I had to sit and ponder. Then I listened to the last parts again. Still I pondered what could have been and what should have happened and how could the system fail so badly? Then. Oh yeah, this is only fiction. You got me Mr. Grisham.

I used to read every John Grisham novel as soon as it came out. I loved every one of them, but especially A Time to Kill. Then, life happened. I didn’t have the time or the energy to read fiction. Until now. I’ve fallen in love again. Mr. Grisham, I’m back. This book is so good. The characters are so real. I couldn’t stop listening. I can’t wait to read all the books I missed.
